Feb. 17, 2001

MADISON, Wisc. - On a day where Stanford sophomore Laura Granville (Chicago, IL/The Latin School) tied the NCAA record for consecutive singles wins with 57, the top-ranked Cardinal (8-0) cruised to a 7-0 victory over Pac-10 rival and ninth-ranked Southern California (6-2) in the quarterfinals of the USTA/ITA National Women's Team Indoor Championships on Friday at the University of Wisconsin.

Granville can shatter the consecutive win mark set by former Stanford great Patty Fendick-McCain when the Cardinal faces 12th-ranked Vanderbilt in the semifinals on Saturday at 3:30 p.m. (CT). Vanderbilt advanced to the semifinals with a 5-2 win over 20th-ranked Northwestern on Friday. The thiird-ranked Granville will attempt to shatter the record against 11th-ranked Julie Ditty on Saturday afternoon.

On Friday, the Cardinal had little trouble with the Women of Troy in the first of three meetings between the teams this year (Apr. 7 @ Stanford & Apr. 20 @ USC). The win was also Stanford's fifth in 7-0 fashion this season.

In singles play, Stanford won five of the six matches in straight sets, and lost six games or less in each of those contests. At No. 1 singles, Granville tied the NCAA consecutive victory record with an impressive 6-0, 6-2 win over 31st-ranked Jewel Peterson. Stanford also received straight set singles victories from 18th-ranked Keiko Tokuda (Clifton, NJ/Clifton HS), 25th-ranked Lauren Kalvaria (Indialantic, FL/Boca Raton Prep), 27th-ranked Gabriela Lastra (Reno, NV/Reno HS) and Lauren Barnikow (Woodbridge, NJ/Woodbridge HS).

Stanford was equally dominating on the doubles side, losing a combined total of just six games in the three matches. At No. 1 doubles, sixth-ranked Barnikow and Kalvaria turned in an impressive 8-4 victory over 16th-ranked Tiffany Brymer and Peterson.
