Morales Provides Game-Winning Hit In Baseball's 5-4 Win At UCLA
Feb. 18, 2001
LOS ANGELES -- Sophomore Michael Morales (Anaheim/Loara HS) hit an RBI single to right field in the top of the 11th inning Sunday and the USC Trojans (No. 1 - ESPN/USA Today Baseball Weekly, No. 2 - Baseball America, No. 3 - Collegiate Baseball) recorded a 5-4 non-conference win against the UCLA Bruins at Jackie Robinson Stadium.
Morales, who served as a team manager last year, hit a 2-2 pitch off Doug Silva (1-1), scoring freshman Jon Brewster (Sherman Oaks/Notre Dame HS), who led off the 11th with a single to left. Morales entered the game in the ninth as a pinch runner for designated hitter Josh Persell.
'I was just thinking about getting the bat on the ball,' said Morales. 'I just went with the outside pitch. That's where I like it and I just went the other way with it.'
'Michael is a good story and that's a good thing happening to him,' said USC Head Coach Mike Gillespie. 'He has hung in there and earned an opportunity. All of our players love that for him.'
USC (8-2) received strong pitching from its bullpen. Freshman Fraser Dizard (Edmonds, Wash./Meadowdale HS) threw 2 1/3 no-hit innings, including a key situation in the ninth, to record his first collegiate win.
Dizard entered the game in the bottom of the ninth with two outs as UCLA (8-4) had runners at first and third. Dizard walked designated hitter Brian Baron to load the bases, but ended the Bruins' threat as third baseman Randall Shelley popped up to second.
'We did see some good pitching from both sides this weekend,' said Gillespie. 'We are particularly pleased by Fraser, who finished the game for us. That's a tough spot for a freshman and I think it was a great experience for him to be out there and to succeed.'
The Bruins had a 4-2 lead in the fifth before USC sophomore Jordan Olson (La Crescenta/La Crescenta HS/L.A. City College) threw 3 1/3 scoreless innings, allowing only two hits.
Sophomore Brian Bannister (Paradise Valley, Ariz./Chaparral HS), who allowed the game-winning home run Friday in UCLA's 4-3 victory, came back with 1 1/3 no-hit innings. Bannister struck out the first batter he faced in Adam Berry, who hit Friday's three-run homer.
The Trojans scored a run in the sixth on an RBI single in the sixth and tied the game, 4-4, in the seventh on an RBI single by senior Bill Peavey (Brisbane/Serra HS).
USC returns to action on Tuesday (Feb. 20) with a home game against Loyola Marymount at 5 p.m. and will play at Pepperdine on Wednesday (Feb. 21) at 2 p.m. as a makeup for the rained-out Feb. 13 contest.
