No. 20 Oregon Softball Defeats Central Michigan, 1-0
Feb. 18, 2001
Las Vegas, Nevada -- Freshman pitcher Anissa Meashintubby picked up her second win in as many games, leading No. 20 Oregon to a 1-0 victory over Cental Michigan at the Desert Breeze Softball Complex in Las Vegas, Nevada. The Ducks finished the tournament 3-2 and are now 10-7 overall. The Chippewas fell to 1-4.
'It was nice to finish the tournament with a win,' Oregon head coach Rick Gamez said. 'I'm proud of our team for coming back after a tough loss yesterday.'
The two teams went scoreless for the first five innings by playing flawless defense and matching hits. In the top of the sixth inning, Oregon was finally able to get on the board. Senior Kelly Planche started the inning with a walk and freshman Kate Peterson laid down a textbook bunt to advance Amber Hutchison, who pinch ran for Planche. Both runners advanced after Lisa Wangler was thrown out at first by Central Michigan pitcher Wendy Stephens. Oregon third baseman Lynsey Haij scored Hutchison with a sacrafice fly to right center field.
Sophomore pitcher Andrea Vidlund came in to close for Oregon in the bottom of the sixth inning and picked up the save by giving up just one hit and striking out two in the final two innings. Meashintubby gave up four hits and struck out two in five innings pitched.
Offensively, junior Missy Coe led the Ducks, finishing the day 2-for-4.
