Bruins Compete At MPSF Indoor Track & Field Championships This Weekend

Selective members of the UCLA women's and men's track and field teams thisweekend (Feb. 23-24) will travel to Flagstaff, AZ for the MPSF IndoorChampionships, hosted by Northern Arizona.

Last weekend (Feb. 17), the Bruins competed at the Air Force Indoor Open,held in Colorado Springs, CO and hosted by the Air Force Academy.

In women's competition at Air Force, the Bruins captured five individualtitles, along with winning the mile relay. UCLA's event winners were: freshmanSheena Johnson in the 400m (56.22), junior Darnesha Griffith in the high jump(6-0 3/4, personal-best, NCAA provisional qualifier), sophomore Karen Bewley inthe pole vault (11-11 3/4), senior Deana Simmons in the triple jump (42-11 1/2,NCAA provisional) and senior Christina Tolson in the weight throw (62-7 1/4,NCAA provisional). The Bruin women's mile relay set a meet record with their winning time of3:49.76.

Also performing well for the Bruin women were: in the 400m, UCLA went one-through-four in the 400m (Johnson, junior Bunmi Ogunleye, second, 56.71,freshman Adia McKinnon, third, 56.95, freshman Nicole Gaskins, fourth, 58.18),in the shot put, UCLA went two-through-four (Tolson, second, top collegian,55-4 3/4, NCAA provisional, freshman Jessica Cosby, third, 52-2 3/4, NCAAprovisional, junior Chaniqua Ross, fourth, 50-7 1/2, NCAA provisional) and inthe weight throw, sophomore Cari Soong was second (62-5 1/4, NCAA provisional).

For the UCLA men at Air Force, the Bruins had two event winners - freshmanOliver Jackson in the long jump (24-8 1/4) and junior Scott Moser in the weightthrow (61-6 3/4).

Other top performances for the UCLA men included: in the pole vault(sophomore Jared Drake and senior Steve Michels tied for third, 16-9 1/2), inthe triple jump (freshman Tony Ortiz was second, 47-7 1/4 and Jackson wasfourth, 46-10 3/4), in the shot put, the Bruins went two-four-five-and-six(Moser, second, top collegian, 62-0 1/2, NCAA provisional, sophomore JackClamon, fourth, 58-6 1/2, NCAA provisional, freshman Dan Ames, fifth, 57-10 1/4,NCAA provisional, sophomore Scott Wiegand, sixth, 56-6 1/2) and in the weightthrow, Ames was second (60-0 1/4).

Looking ahead, the Bruins will compete in a last chance NCAA Indoorqualifying meet at Ames, IA on March 2, selected Bruin women and men vaultersand throwers will travel to Atlanta on March 2-3 for the USA Indoor and on March9-10, the U. of Arkansas will host the 2001 NCAA Indoor Championships inFayetteville. Last season, the Bruin women won the team title, the first NCAAIndoor championship in school history.
