Feb. 17, 2001

RENO, Nev. - University of Oregon sophomores Terry Ellis and Adam Kriz paced a 16-Duck contingent in its second trip to the University of Nevada this month, this time for the Holiday Inn Invitational at the Reno Event Livestock Center.

Ellis lowered his season best in the 55 hurdles by .03 seconds with his win Saturday (7.53, altitude-adjusted to 7.57). Junior teammate Billy Pappas took third in the same race (7.75, 7.79aa).

Also in the sprints, a pair of freshman - Jake Garlick and Brandon Holliday - took third (49.34) and sixth (50.36) overall and scored their first conference qualifying invites in the event this season.

In the middle distances, junior Ross Krempley ran his second-fastest effort indoors in the 800 this season (fourth, 1:54.29), then helped the 4x400 relay clock its fastest effort of the year (first, 3:16.39).

In the throws, sophomore Adam Kriz raised his personal best in the weight throw for the second straight meet, this time by almost two feet (third, 60-4). Senior Rian Ingrim also continued to impress with his second-best mark ever in the shot put (sixth, 55-7 3/4), and sophomore James March opened his season with a 10th-place finish (49-1).

In the jumps, Cody Howell upped his season best in the pole vault to 16-4 3/4 (fifth), finishing one place behind freshman teammate Trevor Woods (fourth, 16-4 3/4). Junior teammate Billy Pappas just missed another top-eight placing with his season best mark (ninth, 14-6). In the high jump, sophomore Jason Boness tied his second best leap of the season (second, 6-11), as did senior Kyley Johnson (third, 6-9), followed by junior Jake Horner (sixth, 6-5).

Sophomore triple jumper Foluso Akinradewo added a win in the triple jump (49-5), with a mark less than three inches off his season best of 49-7 1/4.

The meet was also scored as a team competition through eight places (10-8-6-5-4-3-2-1) and the Duck men finished second with 85 points.

The Duck men's and women's track and field teams compete next weekend, Fri.-Sat., Feb. 23-24 at the Mountain Pacific Championships, in Flagstaff, Ariz.
