Feb. 19, 2001
WALNUT CREEK, Calif. -- The three officials who worked the February 15Arizona State-USC basketball game have been suspended from one or morefuture assignments in the Conference during the 2001 season,Commissioner Tom Hansen announced today.
The referee in that game, Richie Ballesteros, has been suspended for twogames, Hansen reported, while umpires Jim Giron and Don McAllister, weresuspended for one game.
'The officials improperly ejected a head coach from an importantConference game because they misinterpreted the rules governingapplication of technical fouls,' Hansen said. 'While the crew chief (thereferee) has ultimate responsibility for the application of rules by thecrew, each member of the crew is charged with knowledge of the rules andapplying them correctly.
'In this incidence, the crew failed to communicate fully about what hadbeen called and how the rules should be applied, which resulted in themistaken ejection and the absence of the coach from over four minutes ofthe game,' he added.
'They all are accountable for the error.'
The games from which each official has been suspended:
Richie Ballesteros: February 22 - UCLA at Oregon
March 10 - USC at WSU
