Softball Dominates Florida International, Wins Tourney Title
Feb. 18, 2001
LAS VEGAS - UCLA completed a 5-0 record at the UNLV Classic by defeating Florida International 10-0 in a five inning mercy rule game. The top-ranked Bruins and Cal both posted 5-0 tournament records. Tournament rules did not provide for tiebreakers, so the Bruins and Bears were named co-tournament champions.
In Sunday's game against the FIU Panthers, UCLA scored 10 runs on 13 hits and three errors. FIU was held scoreless, and Bruins pitcher Keira Goerl scattered five hits while striking out seven in five innings.
UCLA scored nine runs in the second inning, as Natasha Watley hit her first home run of the season with a grand slam to right field. Tairia Mims was the next Bruin to step to the plate, and homered to centerfield. Claire Sua would also homer in the inning.
The Bruins return to action on Friday, as the travel to Austin, TX, for the Texas Invitational.
