Cal Baseball Defeats Saint Mary's, 4-3

BERKELEY, CA - Freshman left fielder/catcher Chris Grossman hit a sacrifice fly in right field foul territory in the seventh inning, scoring Brad Smith and giving Cal baseball a 4-3 victory over Saint Mary's Tuesday at Evans Diamond. The Bears improve to 8-3 on the season, while the Gaels fall to 5-8.
Saint Mary's had tied the game, 3-3, in the top of the seventh on a two-run single by Brian Finegan off of Cal reliever Andrew Sproul. The Bears responded in the bottom of the seventh when Smith got on on an error by Saint Mary's first baseman Mike Reardon. Smith then advanced to second on a sacrifice by Jeff Dragicevich and advanced to third on a single to center by Brian Horwitz, setting up Grossman's game-winning RBI.
The winning pitcher for Cal ended up being Sproul (1-0, 2.3 innings, three hits, two runs, one walk, two strikeouts). Senior right-hander Ryan Lubner earned his first save of the season when he replaced Sproul with one out in the top of the ninth. The Bears were able to snuff out a potential Gael rally when Grossman (playing catcher) threw out Kaazim Summerville trying to steal second and Lubner got Brian Houle to ground out to shortstop to end the game.
The losing pitcher for Saint Mary's was reliever Gabe Palma (0-2, 4.0 innings, three hits, one unearned run, one walk, two strikeouts). Cal's freshman starter, Brian Montalbo, had pitched well for the Bears, throwing 6.0 innings with two hits, one unearned run, one walk and six strikeouts.
Cal took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first on a two-run by Clint Hoover off of Gael starter Ryan Heil. Saint Mary's came back with an unearned run in the top of the second on an RBI single by Reardon. The Bears got their third run in the third inning on two wild pitches by Heil, scoring Grossman.
At the plate, Cal was paced by Hoover (2-for-4, home run, two RBI), while the Gaels top hitter was Reardon (2-for-3, double, RBI).
Cal will next to Long Beach State for a three-game series, Feb. 23-25 at Blair Field in Long Beach.
