Men's Golf Notes, Week of Feb. 20

THE 2000-01 SEASON -- The Bruins recorded four top 10 finishes during the Fall season, including a fourth place finish at the Husky Invitational. They placed sixth at the Inverness Intercollegiates and at the Carpet Capital event, and they finished eighth at the Northwest Classic. The Bruins were ranked 48th in the GolfWeek poll for Feb. 19.
Upcoming Events -- The Bruins will participate in the Southwestern Intercollegiates, Mar. 3-6, at North Ranch CC in Westlake Village. USC will host the event. Par at North Ranch is 72 over 6,879 yards. In 1988, the Bruins won their first and only NCAA men's golf title there.
Junior Parker McLachlin -- Has averaged 75.2 strokes in 19 rounds. Sixteen of his 18 rounds (88%) have counted in team scoring. He tied for 10th place at the TaylorMade Big Island Classic, tied for 13th at the Inverness Intercollegiates and at the Husky Invitational. Best round of the season was a two-under par 70 in the first round of the Carpet Capital event. He has 11 career top 20 finishes and six career top 10 finishes.
Junior Sang-Eun Ji -- Transfer from El Camino Jr. College, where he averaged 71.0 his first season. Fired a final round of 73 at the PING event, his first in a UCLA uniform. Attended South Torrance High, where he earned all-league honors as a senior in 1998.
Sophomore Travis Johnson -- Leads the team in scoring at 73.7 in 21 rounds with six rounds under par and two rounds under 70. Eighty-eight percent (16 of 18) of his rounds have counted this season in team scoring. Fired a 69 in his first competitive collegiate round of the season at the Northwest Classic, where he finished in a tie for 25th. Also posted another round of 69 in the third round of the TaylorMade event, where he tied for 19th. Tied for 13th at the Inverness Intercollegiates. Also posted a one-under par round of 70 in the first round of the PING event. He has two career top 10 finishes and six in the top 20.
Sophomore J.T. Kohut -- Averaging 76.9 strokes in 18 rounds this season. Tied for 37th at the Husky, tied for 38th at the PING and tied for 42nd at the Carpet Capital after posting a pair of 73s in the first two rounds. Posted a career best score of 70, one under par, in the second round of the PING tournament. Nine of his 18 rounds have counted in team scoring. Posted final rounds of 72 at the Northwest Classic at Trysting Tree and at the PING Collegiates at The Raven. Has one career top 20 finish.
Freshman Steve Conway -- Ranks second in team scoring average at 73.9 in 15 rounds. Fourteen of those rounds have counted in team scoring (93%). Has been the Bruins' top finisher in three of their seven tournaments this season. Posted a collegiate best round of 64 in the final round of the Northwest Classic to finish in a tie for 11th. Also tied for fifth place at the Husky Invitational with a final round score of 71. Tied for 23rd at the Carpet Capital event. Tied for the team lead with four rounds under par. Earned 2000 AJGA Second Team All-America honors.
Freshman John Merrick -- Averaging 75.8 in 21 rounds this season with one top 20 finish. Tied for 18th at the Carpet Capital event, where he also posted a one-under par score of 71 in the first round. Also posted a round of 71 in the final round of the PING event. Eighty-five percent (18 of 21) of his scores have counted in team scoring.
Freshman Roy Moon -- Averaging 77.5 in 12 rounds with one round under par. Posted a 71 in the final round at the Northwest Classic to finish in a tie for 71st. Recorded his first career Top 20 finish by taking 20th place as an individual at the LMU/Farmer John Classic, Nov. 11-13.
