No. 24 Bears Defeat UCSB, 4-2

BERKELEY, CA - The California Golden Bears defeated the UC Santa Barbara Gauchos yesterday, Feb. 19, at the Hellman Tennis Courts, 4-2.

Due to unsuitable weather conditions, the two teams competed only in singles. No. 12-ranked singles player John Paul Fruttero held down the No. 1 spot for the Bears, defeating J.J. Stewart, 6-3, 6-3, while senior Adrian Barnes held down No. 2, knocking out Marcin Kosakowski, 3-6, 6-4, 7-5.

Freshman Wayne Wong made his first appearance of the season in the singles lineup at No. 5, winning a tough three-set match against Michael Faust, 6-3, 4-6, 6-2. Senior Erik Dmytruk grabbed a win at No. 6 by making a strong comeback after falling behind in the first set. Dmytruk rallied for a 2-6, 6-0, 6-3 victory over the Gauchos' Mike Placek.

The two losses of the day came at No. 3 and 4, where No. 24-ranked freshman Balazs Veress played a third set, 3-point tie breaker. UCSB's Scott Schnugg pulled out the victory, defeating Veress in the tie-breaker set, 7-6, 1-6, 4-3(6). At No. 4, sophomore Robert Kowalczyk retired to Marcio Pepe, 3-6, 4-3 ret.

Next for the No. 24-ranked Bears is No. 1 Stanford Saturday, Feb. 24, at the Hellman Tennis Courts.
