HEAD COACH DAVID ESQUER: The Bears coach is in his second season at Cal and has a career record of 33-31 (.516)...Esquer, 35, became only the 10th coach in the long history of Cal baseball, which began in 1892, when he was hired June 10, 1999...Esquer replaced longtime Bear mentor Bob Milano, who retired May 17, 1999 after 22 years as the Bears head coach and 29 years involved in the Cal baseball program...Esquer came to Berkeley after serving as the top assistant at Pepperdine from 1996-99...prior to working at Pepperdine, he was the No. 2 assistant coach at Stanford under Mark Marquess from 1991-96...a shortstop at Stanford from 1984-87, Esquer was a starter on Stanford's 1987 College World Series championship team, earning All-Tournament honors after hitting .350 with six RBI in Omaha...he also earned All-Pac-10 Southern Division honors as a senior and went on to play professional baseball for four seasons with the Baltimore Orioles, California Angels and Milwaukee Brewers organizations...

BEAR NOTES: The 2001 Cal baseball team is 8-3 after a three-game series Feb. 16-18 at Loyola Marymount (won 14-6, lost 9-8, won 8-5) and a 4-3 victory Tuesday versus Saint Mary's...the Bears 8-3 start is Cal's best start since the 1992 squad (which went on to the College World Series) was 8-3 after its first 11 games... In the Feb. 16 victory at LMU, Cal was led by junior Trevor Hutchinson and an 18-hit attack...Hutchinson (2-1) pitched 6.0 innings with seven hits, three earned runs, only one walk and a career-high 12 strikeout...he now has 27 strikeouts and only two walks in 21.0 innings this season...at the plate, Cal was led by junior second baseman Carson White, who went 4-for-5 with a triple and three RBI...freshman Chris Grossman (2-for-5, RBI), freshman Conor Jackson (2-for-4, RBI), senior Clint Hoover (2-for-5, two RBI), senior Rob Meyer (2-for-5, RBI) and freshman Noah Jackson (2-for-3, RBI) had two-hits apiece...in the Feb. 17 loss, Cal was paced by Hoover, who went a career-high 4-for-5 with a double...sophomore designated hitter David Weiner (2-for-5 double, two RBI), freshman outfielder Brian Horwitz (2-for-4, double, triple) and sophomore catcher John Baker had two hits apiece...Baker was 2-for-2 with an RBI double in the second inning and hit his first collegiate home run in the fourth inning...the Bears won Feb. 18 behind the pitching of senior right-hander David Cash and two, four-run innings...Cal had fallen behind 4-0 aft the first inning, but from that point on, Cash pitched a career-high 8.0 innings with seven hits, five runs, one walk and tied a career-high nine strikeouts...between the third and eighth innings, he retired 17 straight batters...Cash is now 3-0 on the season and has a 16-4 record as a Bear...senior Andrew Sproul game in in the ninth inning (1.0 inning, no hits, no runs, one strikeout) to pick up his first save of the season...at the plate, Cal was paced by Hoover (2-for-5, home run, two RBI), Horwitz (2-for-5, double, RBI) and freshman shortstop Jeff Dragicevich (2-for-5, double)....Hoover finished the three-game series at LMU 8-for-15 with a double, a home run and four RBI... Tuesday, Grossman knocked in the winning run with a sacrifice fly in right field foul territory in the seventh inning...the winning pitcher was Sproul (1-0, 2.3 innings, three hits, two runs, one walk, two strikeouts)...senior right-hander Ryan Lubner earned his first Cal save when he replaced Sproul with one out in the top of the ninth...the Bears were able to snuff out a potential Gael rally when Grossman (catching) threw out a runner at second and Lubner got a ground out to end the game...Cal's freshman starter, Brian Montalbo, pitched well for the Bears (6.0 innings, two hits, one unearned run, one walk, six strikeouts)...Montalbo is 1-0 with a 1.02 ERA and has 17 strikeouts in 17.7 innings this season...Cal was led by Hoover (2-for-4, home run, two RBI) at the plate...
