Two ASU Swimmers Race Into Record Books At First Day Of Women's Pac-10 Championships

Feb. 22, 2001

FEDERAL WAY, Wash. -- Arizona State freshman Brook Townsend swam her way into the ASU record books at the first day of the women's swimming Pacific-10 Conference Championships at the Weyerhaeuser King County Aquatic Center in Federal Way, Wash., Thursday.

Swimming in the 500-yard freestyle, Townsend first turned in a preliminary time of 4:49.97 - an NCAA `B' qualifying time and the ninth all-time at ASU -- to advance to the finals. Then, in the final, Townsend captured fourth-place with another NCAA `B' qualifying time of 4:49.04, moving her past 2000 graduate Carolyn Adel (4:49.68) and into eighth all-time at ASU.

The Sun Devils' next-highest finals finish of the evening was established by junior Riley Mants in the 200y individual medley. Mants, who went in as ASU's seventh-best all-time swimmer in the event (2:03.31), moved up to fifth-place all-time with a tenth-place (second in the B-final) time of 2:02.95, which was also an NCAA `B' time.

The Sun Devils, who are in sixth-place after the first day, got most of their points out of the 500y free, where sophomore Katie Titcomb swam ASU's second-fastest time of the season to earn 12th-place with her personal-best 4:56.35.

Sophomore Lyndsay Devaney picked up 18th-place in the 500y free in 4:57.20, while sophomore Jancy Thompson claimed 22nd in 5:01.26.

Another sophomore, Claire Hedenskog, was the only other ASU swimmer to qualify for an event final, as she placed 16th in the 50y free in 23.98 (slower than her prelim time of 23.73).

Over in the diving pool, which included Pac-10 men's diving championships, Sun Devil senior Marc Briggs snapped a 13-year-old school record with his preliminary effort of 365.25 in the 3-meter. Junior Natalie Burgess led ASU's female divers with a ninth-place preliminary effort of 238.80 in the 1-meter discipline.

The women's Pac-10 Championships will continue tomorrow with action in the following seven swimming events: 200y medley relay (finals only), 800y free relay (finals only), 400y individual medley (prelims/finals), 100y butterfly (prelims/finals), 200y freestyle (prelims/finals), 100y breaststroke (prelims/finals), 100y backstroke (prelims/finals).
