Wrestling Headed To Pac-10 Championships
Feb. 22, 2001
After losing two NCAA place-winners and from last year's squad, the Cardinal began afresh. Youth marked the 2000-01 campaign and despite an arduous season, the Card earned its stripes. Many individuals gave incredible performances throughout the season, although the team's overall record does not reflect it.
133 pounds: Team-leader Justin Walker (So.) goes into the weekend with an impressive 25 wins. He is on a roll, winning five of his last six bouts. Walker recorded four wins against Pac-10 opponents, with his only conference losses occurring in November. After his rookie season at 141 pounds, Walker dropped a weight class to fill the hole that Pac-10 champion Zach Zimmerer left. Walker stepped into the role and made a quick impact. Walker also finished in the top-five at two tournaments, placing fourth at the California Open on Nov. 12 and third at the All Cal Invitational on Feb. 3.
184 pounds: Harold Penson (So.) made his presence felt as well. Expected to make a sizeable contribution this year, Penson went from four wins in his freshman year to 18 this season. He is coming off a third place finish at the All Cal Invitational and wins against Minnesota State Mankato and Cal Poly.
141 pounds: Paul Gross (Fr.) and Levi Weikel-Magden (Jr.) have been sharing time at 141 pounds and have chalked up 21 wins between them. Gross leads the team with six falls, while Weikel-Magden contributes one of the Cardinal's four technical falls. Weikel-Magden claimed victories in his three conference match-ups while Gross is 1-0 in Pac-10 competition.
174 pounds: Garrett Johnston (Fr.) contributed 10 wins during the season, two coming off Pac-10 opponents.
