Big Inning Costs Beavers

Feb. 23, 2001

LAS VEGAS, Nev. - Oregon State surrendered a seven-run sixth inning to Clemson and lost to the 10th-ranked Tigers 9-5 in non-league baseball Friday at the Nevada-Las Vegas Tournament. The Beavers (4-4 overall, 0-0 Pacific-10) saw their four-game winning streak end with the loss.

OSU will play Clemson (4-1, 0-0 Atlantic Coast) again Saturday at 10 a.m. and then take on host Nevada-Las Vegas at 2 p.m., and the first game can be heard on KLOO-AM (1340). The Beavers wrap up the tourney on Sunday at 11 a.m. against Clemson, and that game will also be on KLOO.

On Friday, the Beavers took a 5-2 lead into the top of the sixth inning only to see the Tigers score seven runs on seven hits, a walk, a hit batter and a pair of wild pitches. Three of the hits were groundball singles through the infield and OSU misplayed a bunt into a base hit.

'We just can't play a College World Series team and give up seven runs in one inning,' Oregon State coach Pat Casey said. 'I felt we had some opportunities for somebody to make a special play and get us out of the inning, and we didn't do it.'

Until then, Beaver starter Thad Johnson had managed to hold the Tigers but he'd worked out of trouble in the third and fifth innings. The senior righthander was charged with five of the seven-inning runs and dropped to 0-1 this season, going 5.0 innings and allowing seven runs (five earned) on eight hits and five walks while striking out five.

'We had a three-run lead and one of our very best starters on the mound, and he needs to give us six innings,' Casey said. 'Thad had been living on the edge a little bit (in earlier innings) and so had their guy, but they were a little more patient at the plate than we were.'

Clemson righthanders Jarrod Schmidt and Matt Henrie combined to limit OSU to nine hits, the first time this season the Beavers haven't managed at least 10 hits in a game.Over the last 5.2 innings, Oregon State managed just three hits and five baserunners.

The Tigers went up 2-0 on Michael Johnson's two-run homer in the top of the second inning, but the Beavers tied it on Chris Biles' two-run shot over the centerfield wall in the bottom of the second. Oregon State then went up 3-2 in the third when Will Hudson led off with a double to right and eventually scored on Andy Jarvis' sacrifice fly.

Oregon State extended its lead to 5-2 with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth. Zach Gordon grounded a run-scoring single through the left side of the infield, then Bryan Ingram added a sacrifice fly.

Hudson was 2-for-5 with a pair of doubles for Oregon State, while Biles was 2-for-4.
