Ducks Pummel UC Santa Barbara Gauchos 6-1
Feb. 23, 2001
EUGENE, Ore. --The Ducks men's tennis squad picked up its fourth-straight win Friday, routingUC Santa Barbara 6-1. In the last four matches, Oregon has only given up a total of six points to opponents Idaho, New Mexico St., Pacific and UCSB.
Though the Ducks were upset at No. 2 singles and No. 1 doubles, senior Oded Teig left UCSB's John Stewart in the dust with a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 1 singles.
'Oded's preparation for this match really helped us tonight, ' said Oregon head coach Chris Russell. 'His energy is something the whole team strives for from start to finish.'
At No. 6 singles, Freshman Greg Dubourdieu gave another stellar performance, as he defeated the Gaucho's Alex Yaftali, 6-2, 6-2. The hardest-fought Oregon win came at No. 4 singles, as senior David Becker took Marcio Pepe of UCSB to three drawn-out sets, 4-6, 7-5, 7-5.
'Greg continues his competitive ways, ' said Russell. 'In his last three matches he's played tough on the court.'
In Sunday's match up against the No. 6 Huskies, the Ducks will enjoy the home court advantage at the Student Tennis Center where they took the last three matches.
'Our guys feel relaxed at home, and it helps us with wins,' said Russell. 'But we know Washington is coming off a big weekend at the ITA's, knocking off some big teams like Georgia. We are going to have to battle better than we have all year with our best concentration, focus and shot selection.'
Up next, Oregon 5-5 overall, battle No. 6 Washington at the Student Tennis Center in Eugene, Sunday, February 25.
