No. 20 Oregon Softball Perfect On First Day Of Troy Cox Classic

Las Cruces, New Mexico - The No. 20 University of Oregon softball team (12-7) picked up two wins on the first day of the Troy Cox Classic in Las Cruces, New Mexico. The Ducks defeated Southern Illinois 4-1 in a morning game and finished the day with a 7-6 win over host New Mexico State.

'I'm very pleased with how we came out today,' Oregon head coach Rick Gamez said. 'When things got close we were able to come back and put together a strong offensive game.'

In Game 1, junior pitcher Connie McMurren struck out seven and gave up six hits in leading the Ducks to victory. McMurren improves to 4-3 for the season and has 34 total strike outs.

The Ducks took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third inning, but Southern Illinois quickly tied the game by scoring in the bottom of the third. The two teams went scoreless in the fourth and fifth innings, but Oregon scored three runs in the sixth inning to widen the gap.

Junior Missy Coe and sophomore Alyssa Laux led Oregon, each going 2-for-3 with one run scored and one run batted in. Sophomore Lisa Wangler and freshman Kristi Hall scored Oregon's other two runs.

Against host school New Mexico State, Wangler game in in the fourth inning to lead the Ducks to their second win of the day. Wangler struck out two batters and allowed zero hits and zero runs in three innings pitched. Wangler improves to 3-2 on the season. Wangler also led Oregon offensively, going 3-for-4 with two runs scored.

Both teams came out scoring in the first inning, New Mexico State scoring one run to take the early lead. Oregon responded in the bottom of the first with two runs. Wangler singled to first base and stole second. Laux singled to right field and both runners advanced on the New Mexico State throw. Wangler later scored on an error by catcher Adrian Nobles. Laux advanced to third base following another New Mexico State error and scored on a sacrifice fly by Coe.

In the top of the third inning New Mexico State started its own rally, scoring four runs on three hits and three Oregon errors.

Oregon responded in the bottom of the fifth inning, scoring three runs to tie the game at five. The Ducks then held the Lobos scoreless in their at-bat. Oregon freshman Anissa Meashintubby scored the Ducks' winning run in the seventh after a single by Peterson.
