No. 5 Softball Tops No. 15 Nebraska In Second Game at NFCA Classic, 2-1

COLUMBUS, GA - The No. 5 California Golden Bears used a double in the bottom of the fourth by sophomore Veronica Nelson to drive in senior Paige Bowie to earn the win 2-1 win over the No. 15 Nebraska Cornhuskers in the second game of the NFCA Leadoff Classic pool play at South Commons Fields. With the win, Cal improves its unblemished record to 9-0 on the year while Nebraska falls to 6-5 in 2001.
This is the second meeting between the two teams, with the Bears taking game one over the Cornhuskers at the UNLV Classic on Feb. 17, 6-5.
With two outs in the bottom of the fourth, Bowie broke up Nebraska's Leigh Anne Walker no-hitter with a single up the middle. Nelson followed with a line drive double down the right field. Bowie hustled around the bases and slid past a diving Nebraska catcher Amber Burgess to break the 0-0 tie and put Cal on the board, 1-0, giving Nelson her 10th RBI on the year.
Nelson came up again in the sixth and deposited a ball well over the left field fence to give the Bears an insurance run and Nelson her third home run this season and 17th on her career.
Senior Nicole DiSalvio started in the circle for the Bears, going the distance, while allowing a single run on five hits, while improving to 3-0 on the year.
Walker went the distance for the Cornhuskers, allowing two runs on five Cal hits, falling to 2-1 to in 2001.
Cal defeated No. 10 DePaul earlier in the day, 1-0, when Eryn Manahan scored the winning run on a wild pitch with one out in the bottom of the seventh.
The Bears returns to action tomorrow to take on Long Island at 12:30 p.m. EST.
