UCLA Downs No. 11 Cal State Fullerton 4-0
Feb. 23, 2001
AUSTIN, TX - The top-ranked UCLA softball team improved its record to 17-0 on the season with a 4-0 victory over No. 11 Cal State Fullerton on Friday afternoon at the Texas Invitational. With the loss, the Titans fall to 13-3 on the season. All three losses are to UCLA.
Junior pitcher Amanda Freed pitched all seven innings for the Bruins, striking out eight and walking three and allowing two hits. The game started during a light rain, and was delayed for one hour, 23 minutes with two outs with the Titans at bat in the bottom of the first inning.
That 1-0 lead would stand until the top of the seventh inning, when Freed reached base on a catchers interference call, shortstop Natasha Watley singled to right field and Tairia Mims followed with a three-run home run down the left field line. It was the ninth home run of the year for Mims, matching her season total from her freshman campaign. Mims has now tied Alleah Poulson for 12th on UCLA's all-time list for career home runs.
Friday's rain delay has mandated a schedule change for the Texas Invitational. The Bruins will not take the field again until 7 pm Central Time on Saturday, when they will take on the host school, No. 22 Texas. The semifinal games, which had been scheduled for Saturday at 5 and 7 pm, have been eliminated. Teams will now be seeded in Sunday's Championship and Consolation games based upon their tournament round-robin record.
