Feb. 23, 2001
The USC women's track and field and water polo teams have both been ranked preseason No. 1 by Sports Illustrated for Women in the magazine's Spring College Preview edition for March/April, 2001.
The issue, available on newstands Feb. 22, ranked the top ten collegiate women's teams in seven sports: lacrosse, tennis, water polo, track and field, softball, crew and golf. Besides garnering the top ranking in track and field and water polo, USC also was fourth in golf and seventh in crew.
Two Trojan athletes were honored as preseason Players of the Year in their sport: junior All-American sprinter Angela Williams, the two-time defending NCAA 100m champ, and junior All-American utility player Aniko Pelle, the reigning Peter J. Cutino Award winner as the nation's best women's water polo player.
The Women of Troy water polo team won the national title in 1999 and finished second in 2000, while the women's track and field team also finished second last year.
