Beavers Take Two In Baseball

Feb. 24, 2001

LAS VEGAS, Nev. - Oregon State held off a late-inning comeback and then staged one of its own Saturday, beating 10th-ranked Clemson 10-9 and Nevada-Las Vegas 11-9 in non-league baseball at Earl Wilson Stadium. The Beavers (6-4 overall, 0-0 Pacific-10), who have won six of their last seven games, wrap up the UNLV Tournament against Clemson on Sunday at 11 a.m., the game can be heard on KLOO-AM (1340).

The Beavers led Clemson (4-3, 0-0 Atlantic Coast) by a 10-1 score before seeing the Tigers score nine runs in the final three innings. OSU then had to score three runs with two out in the ninth inning to beat UNLV (5-9, 0-0 Mountain West) after trailing 7-0 after two innings.

Against UNLV, Zach Gordon grounded a single through the left side of the infield to drive in the tying run, then Bryan Ingram doubled into the rightfield corner to push across the winning runs. It was the fourth time in six games the Beavers had come from behind in the final three innings to win, and Gordon feels that type of effort is contagious.

'It is,' said the senior second baseman, who has six hits on the weekend. 'When you know you can come from behind, an early deficit doesn't mean anything. You win a couple of games like that, and you know you can get the job done.'

Gordon scored all the way from first on Ingram's drive just inside the rightfield line, the junior catcher had entered the game in the middle innings.

'When you come off the bench, it's an opportunity to collect your thoughts before you go in,' Ingram said. 'I knew in that situation, if he gave me a pitch I could handle, I'd get the job done. It was a great team win, everybody contributed.'

One of the keys was the relief pitching of junior lefthander Craig Hays. After starter Ben Rowe was knocked out of the game in the second inning, Hays came on to pitch 6.2 innings, he allowed just two runs (both earned) on five hits and one walk while striking out three. Stephen Copeland retired the Rebels in order in the ninth for his second save.

'Craig pitched very well,' OSU head coach Pat Casey said. 'We've been trying to get him to give us those kind of outings, and he did a great job. He kept us in the game to where we could win it.'

Trailing 7-0 after two innings, the Beavers got Brian Barden's two-run single and Andy Jarvis' two-run double in the third to crawl within 7-4. OSU eventually narrowed the gap to 8-7 on Will Hudson's first career homer, a solo shot to right-center in the sixth inning.

Still, the Beavers were down 9-8 going into the top of the ninth. After Jarvis popped out, Jason McBride evaded the tag of UNLV first baseman Joe Jacobitz after a throwing error by shortstop Ryan Ruiz, pinch-hitter Kerisi Reynolds struck out to bring OSU down to its final out.

But pinch-hitter Josh Carter singled through the left side, advancing pinch-runner Jake Postlewait to second, and Gordon followed with his single to score Postlewait and move pinch runner Scott Nicholson to second. Then Ingram pushed his opposite-field double to right, scoring both runners and giving OSU its first lead.

In Saturday's first game, it was the Beavers who got the early jump, going in front 8-1 after two innings. OSU used the longball to its advantage, getting a two-run homer from Barden, a solo homer by Biles and a three-run shot by Jarvis in the first two frames.

Biles added another solo homer - his third homer in two days - as Oregon State bumped its lead to 10-1 after four innings. Biles went 4-for-5 against the Tigers in Saturday's first game.

Meanwhile, senior lefthander Scott Nicholson was sailing along for the Beavers, striking out six of seven hitters at one point and holding the Tigers scoreless from the second through sixth innings.

Clemson, a team that has also showed the ability to rally, displayed it in the final three innings as Nicholson tried to hang on. He left after eight innings of work with OSU in front 10-6, he allowed the runs (all earned) on 11 hits and three walks, striking out six in improving to 2-0 on the season.

'Scott was outstanding,' Casey said. 'I think the park hurt him a little (on the two homers he allowed) and he got a couple of bad bounces.'

Copeland came on to pitch the ninth, and a walk and a one-out single set up Jeff Baker's three-run homer that drew Clemson within 10-9. But Copeland steadied himself and got had Coder to fly out to center and Jarrod Schmidt to ground out to end the game.
