No. 5 Softball Sweeps Pool Play At NFCA Leadoff Classic As It Defeated Long Island, 7-1

COLUMBUS, GA -- - The No. 5 California Golden Bears used five Long Island errors to defeat the Blackbirds, 7-1, in the final game of pool play at the NFCA Leadoff Classic. The Bears (10-0) now advance to the gold bracket of the Leadoff Classic as the No. 2 seed, facing the No. 6 ranked and No. 2 seed LSU Tigers in the gold bracket tonight at 8 p.m. EST. The tournament turns into single elimination, with the top eight teams playing in the gold bracket, the next eight team in the silver bracket and the remaining eight teams to compete in the bronze bracket.
For Cal, sophomore Kristen Morley led off the bottom of the first by reaching base on an error by the Blackbird second baseman, and proceeded to steal second, her first stolen base on the year. Morley came all the way around to score the first Bear run when senior Paige Bowie double to right center. Sophomore Veronica Nelson then reached first on an intentional walk and moved to second on a fielder's choice ground out by junior Candace Harper, also moving Bowie to third. Sophomore Eryn Manahan followed with a base hit up the middle, bringing in Nelson and Bowie, and giving the Bears an early 3-0 lead.
Long Island came back with its only run on the day in the second inning on a home run by Sonia Zapata, cutting the Bears lead to, 3-1.
With one out in the bottom of the fourth, Cal got on the board again. Manahan hit a line drive single to left and went to second on senior Amber Phillips infield single, giving the Bears runners on first and second. Phillips and Manahan stole second and third, respectively, and came around to score when sophomore Courtney Scott reached on an error by the shortstop, giving the Bears a 5-1 lead.
Cal continued its scoring ways with two more runs in the fifth, giving the Bears a comfortable, 7-1 lead. In the inning, senior Pauline Dueï¿½as scored on an error by the first baseman and Manahan had her third hit on the day to drive in Bowie who singled earlier in the inning.
Manahan finished the game 3-for-3 with a run scored and three RBI. Bowie recorded a pair of hits, scoring two and driving in one.
After defeating Nebraska yesterday, 2-1, Nicole DiSalvio came back to start for the Bears in the circle, surrendering one run on just two Long Island hits and earning her fourth win on the year. Sophomore Kourtney Davis came in to pitch in the seventh inning for the Bears to finish off the Blackbirds.
