Feb. 24, 2001
SEATTLE -- The Husky men's track team came within four and a half points of the Mountain Pacific championship title thanks to the efforts of five event winners on the second day of competition, earning the team third-place overall honors.
Senior Ja'Warren Hooker (Ellensburg, Wash.) bettered both of his automatic qualifying marks, despite the altitude, en route to winning the 60- and 200-meter dash events. Sophomore Brad Walker (Spokane, Wash.) topped his provisional qualifying mark in the pole vault by more than four inches, while earning top honors. Senior David Bazzi (Seattle, Wash.) and junior Jason Fayant (Spokane, Wash.) also won their events for the Husky men, the mile run and 5,000 meters respectively.
The UW men, who placed third behind Washington State and Arizona, improved on last year's sixth place performance despite missing four NCAA competitors.
On the women's side, the 4x400-meter relay team of Kelsey Sheppard, Chelsie Pentz, Tesha Moore and Arlene Bledsoe notched a NCAA provisional qualifying time of 3:41.77, despite the altitude, en route to a runner-up finish in the event. Sophomore Kate Bradshaw (Issaquah, Wash.) earned second place for the UW women in the 5,000-meter run, her first 5K race of the indoor season.
The Husky women placed sixth in the meet despite having only 15 team members compete due to injury. The UW women placed fourth at last year's Mountain Pacific Championships.
