Feb. 25, 2001
Las Vegas, Nev. - No. 10 Clemson (4-4) used an offensive barrage of 14 hits, and three pitchers combined for a three-hitter as the Tigers defeated Oregon State (6-4) 13-2 in the final day of the UNLV Tournament. The game was suspended after the seventh inning due to the tournament's 10-run rule. The Beavers split four games at the three-day tournament, captured one of three against the Tigers.
Clemson led only 1-0 entering the fourth inning, but exploded for five runs in the inning and 12 runs total over the last four frames. Clemson second baseman Ryan Riley provided the fourth inning spark with a three run inside the park home run. Riley finished the day 3-for-4 at the plate with four RBI. Teammate Casey Stone also had a four RBI game, three of those on a two-out double in the seventh.
Oregon State earned just one hit off starting pitcher Steve Reba, a leadoff single in the fifth by left-fielder Curtis Davis. Pinch-hitter Pat Stevens had the only overall productive day at the plate for OSU, going 2-for-2 and earning the team's only RBI of the game in the Beavers' two-run seventh. Stevens also had a leadoff single in the sixth.
Reba upped his record to 2-0 for Clemson, while starting OSU pitcher Mark McLemore suffered the setback, falling to 0-2. McLemore pitched 3 1/3 innings, allowing five earned runs, five walks, four hits, and struck out one.
Oregon State returns to Corvallis for its home opener at Goss Stadium Tuesday against the University of Portland at 2 p.m. The Beavers also have a two-game weekend series at home versus the University of San Francisco.
