No. 7 Cal loses to the No. 1 Cardinal, 6-1
Feb. 25, 2001
Each of Stanford's top five singles players won as the top-ranked Cardinal improved its record to 11-0 overall and 4-0 in the Pac-10 Conference with a 6-1 victory over No. 7 California at the Taube Family Tennis Stadium. The Bears drop to 4-2 overall and 2-2 in conference action.
Stanford, which was coming off a perfect 4-0 road trip, began its homecoming by sweeping the doubles matches for the first point of the afternoon. Each of the three Stanford wins came by identical 8-4 scores, led by the top Cardinal squad of Lauren Barnikow and Lauren Kalvaria, which posted an 8-4 victory over the tandem of senior Anita Kurimay and freshman Raquel Kops-Jones.
In singles action, Laura Granville, the third-ranked player in the nation, cruised to a 6-1, 6-3 triumph over freshman Kops-Jones in the No. 1 spot. Two other Cardinal players recorded straight-set victories: Gabriela Lastra defeated freshman Jieun Jacobs at No. 3, 6-0, 6-2, while Keiko Tokuda defeated freshman Sekita Grant at No. 5 (6-3, 6-3). Sophomore Christina Fusano who was flawless until this afternoon in dual match competition, fell to Lauren Kalvaria in a tough three set match, 6-4, 5-7, 6-2, helping Kalvaria to remain undefeated in singles action this year.
Cal's lone point of the match came at No. 6 singles, where Kurimay defeated Stanford's Emilia Anderson, 6-1, 6-3. This was Kurimay's first appearance in the singles lineup since last season. Hampered by leg surgery at the end of the fall, Kurimay had recently been playing doubles for the Bears.
The Bears next will host Pepperdine, Friday, March 2 at the Hellman Tennis Courts.
