Ducks in Fourth Place After First Day of Pac-10 Wrestling Champs

EUGENE - The No. 23 University of Oregon wrestling team stood in fourth place with 81 1/2 points after Sunday's opening sessions of the Pac-10 Wrestling Championships, at the University of Oregon's McArthur Court.

Arizona State leads the competition after Sunday's morning and afternoon sessions with 92 points, ahead of Oregon State (second, 86), Boise State (fourth, 81), Cal Poly (fifth, 68 1/2), Cal State Bakersfield (sixth, 51), UC Davis (seventh, 46), Portland State (eighth, 41), Stanford (ninth, 16) and Cal State Fullerton (10th, 10).

Individually, the Ducks still feature three grapplers in contention for titles among the 10 weight classes.

At 133 pounds, sophomore Brian Watson posted two wins Sunday, defeating Cal State Bakersfield's Joe Garcia, 7-1, and Oregon State's Ben Richards, 4-1. On Monday, he takes on Arizona State's David Douglas.

At 184 pounds, senior and two-time defending champion Doug Lee posted wins Sunday over Cal State Fullerton's Josh Ready by fall at 4:48, and over Arizona State's R.D. Pursell, 3-2. On Monday, he faces Portland State's Jeremy Wilson.

At 197, senior Chael Sonnen opened with a fall at 7:00 over Stanford's Matt Twomey, then followed with a 16-5 major decision over Portland State's Randy Davidson and an 11-3 major decision over Oregon State's Jason Lovell. On Monday, Sonnnen, sixth-ranked nationally, faces fifth-ranked Rusty Cook of Boise State.

Another of the Ducks' potential titlests, sophomore heavyweight Eric Webb, had to withdraw due to injury after suffering an injury in a pre-meet warm-up with teammate Doug Lee.

Several other Ducks also will compete Monday in consolation bracket action, still in the hunt for third-place finishes.

At 125 pounds, junior Shaun Williams went 2-1 in championship bracket action Sunday. He opened with a 19-7 major decision over Arizona State's Chris Knox, then followed with a 6-5 decision over Stanford's Nathan Peterson. In the evening's finale, he lost to Cal State Bakersfield's Ruben DeLeon, 11-9, in overtime. Monday he opens against Jamie Garza of Cal Poly.

At 141 pounds, sophomore Casey Hunt opened with a fall over Cal State's Fullerton John Blalock at 4:43, then lost to Oregon State's Shane Cuanan. In his opening consolation match Sunday evening, he posted a win over Cal State Bakersfield's Zhon Kuraspediani, 19-10, by major decision. Monday, he opens against Boise State's Gabe Vigil.

At 149 pounds, sophomore Tony Overstake defeated Stanford's Brendan Fox, 13-5, with a major decision, then followed with another major decision win over UC Davis' Josh Sternburg, 15-2. After a 9-7 loss to Arizona State's Dana Holland Sunday evening, he next wrestles Bakersfield's Cal State's Thomas Juarez Monday morning.

At 157 pounds, junior Eugene Harris opened with a win over UC Davis' Nick Davis, 4-3, then lost to Boise State's Kirk White by injury default. On Monday in his consolation round he opens against Cal Poly's Josh Blad.

At 165 pounds, freshman Luke Larwin lost his championship bracket opener to Portland State's Chris Parker, 11-6. In his consolation debut, he beat Cal Poly's Brody Barrios, 4-3, then added a 3-1 win over Cal State Fullerton's Leonel Sanchez. Monday, he wrestles Oregon State's Jed Pennell in his opener.

The only Duck not to advance to Monday morning's consolation action was 174-pounder. The Duck sophomore opened Sunday with a 14-5 major decision over Boise State's Jon Terry, then lost by fall to Cal Poly's Steve Strange at 1:19. In his consolation opener, he lost by fall to Cal State Bakerfield's at 4:07.

Action begins Monday morning at 11 am with the rest of consolation action for places up to third place, while each weight class's championships are set for Monday evening for a 6 pm start.
