Kamimura Leads Husky Golfers to Bay Area Classic Title
Feb. 27, 2001
Vallejo, CA - Washington junior Kelli Kamimura fired a 3-under 69 for the second consecutive day to lead the Washington women's golf team to the championship at the Bay Area Classic in Vallejo, Calif. Washington finished with a 36-hole score of 602 to win the tournament by 16 shots over second-place California.
Kamimura was the only golfer to shoot under par in either of the two rounds and finished at 6-under 138 to capture medalist honors, 11 shots ahead of San Diego State's Heather Rollo who placed second. The back-to-back 69s were a first for Kamimura and with the victory, she moves into a tie for first in the Husky record book with Dodie Mazucca and head coach Mary Lou Mulflur for most career wins with three. Her 69 also ties the Husky record for lowest second-round score in a tournament.
'I was really happy for Kelli because she has struggled a little bit this season,' said Husky coach Mary Lou Mulflur. 'She really played well the last two days and basically lapped the field today. It was probably her best back-to-back rounds she has played since she has been here.
'The team was happy to win but they know they could play better. When we have Kelli firing a 69 today, we should score better as a team. Still, we had a lot of momentum after the Arizona tournament, and the team did a good job this week of carrying that over into this event. It helps to get a win this early in the season.'
Washington freshman Lindsay Morgan tied for third place, carding a two-day score of 8-over 152, her best finish as a Husky. Louise Friberg, coming off a seventh-place showing last weekend at the Wildcat Invitational, cracked the top-10 again finishing eighth at 11-over 155. Freshman Jamie Michaud shot a second-round 76 to move up from 39th to 19th, also a career-best finish. Elisha Au fired a 162 to place 30th.
The Huskies look to continue their winning ways next week at the Spartan Invitational, March 5-7 in Monterey, Calif.
