Ninth-Ranked ASU Women's Tennis to Battle Furman This Thursday

ON TAP: Ninth-ranked Arizona State (8-1, 3-1) will take on Furman University (3-3) on Thursday at 1:30 p.m. (MST) at the Whiteman Tennis Center.

THE MATCH-UPS: The Devils are coming off a 7-0 sweep of the University of Oregon, University of New Mexico, University of Nevada-Las Vegas, Harvard University, and Tulane University in the past five of six outings. ASU remains undefeated at home (6-0) and is on a seven outing winning streak. Furman, which is 0-1 on the road, comes into Tempe for only its second road dual of the season.

WORTH WATCHING: Guiding the Devils' attack this season is No. 45 sophomore Megan Yeats, who has earned a 16-4 record with her solid play. Also this year, freshman Cindy Sureephong accompanies experienced transfer Adria Engel, who is currently ranked No. 35. Sureephong finished fourth in doubles competition at the 2000 Clay Court Nationals. As a Devil, Sureephong has compiled a 12-2 record while going undefeated (8-0) in dual action. Engel, the 2000 Atlantic Coast Conference Player of the Year, is currently 10-5 for the Devils on the No. 1 court. She was also named ITA's National Rookie of the Year before transferring to Arizona State from Wake Forest.

HEAD COACH SHEILA MCINERNEY: In her 17th season as head coach of the Sun Devils, the former USC All-American currently ranks second in ASU school history with 263 wins. McInerney has coached 14 different All-Americans and has guided the Sun Devils to NCAA tournament play each of the past 13 seasons. With the help of three All-Americans last season, McInerney and her squad reached the quarterfinals in the NCAA tournament after knocking off Duke University in the round of 16.

IN THE RANKINGS: Five ASU players are currently listed in the nation's top rankings by the ITA. In singles action, No. 35-ranked Adria Engel is accompanied by No. 45-ranked teammate Megan Yeats. Engel has earned a 7-2 record on the No. 1 court, and Yeats (16-4) has posted an 8-1 record on the No. 3 court thus far. As a doubles team, the Mhairi Brown/Celena McCoury tandem posts a No. 50 ranking, and Engel pairs up with teammate Karin Palme for a No. 33 doubles ranking.
