Women's Tennis Remains No. 1 In WingspanBank.com Collegiate Rankings

PRINCETON, N.J. - The Stanford University women's tennis team remained at No. 1 in the latest WingspanBank.com Collegiate Tennis Rankings administered and released today by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA). Stanford (11-0) has held the top spot in the women's rankings all five weeks of the 2001 season.
The Stanford women topped then-No. 7 California 6-1 in their only match last week. The Cardinal received all six first-place votes from the ITA National Ranking Committee for 450 points. Following Stanford in the top ten this week are: Georgia (6-1), Duke (6-1), Florida (4-0), Notre Dame (10-2), Texas (6-0), Vanderbilt (10-1), Arizona State (7-1), Pepperdine (5-3) andCalifornia (4-2). This week, the Cardinal hosts Pacific on Friday at 1:30 p.m. and Pepperdine on Saturday at noon.
Rounding out the women's top 25 are: Northwestern, Southern California, Baylor, Tennessee, South Alabama, William & Mary, Washington, South Carolina, North Carolina, Wake Forest, Ohio State, UCLA, Arizona, Arkansas, and (tie) Illinois and Texas A&M. Illinois and Texas A&M, tied for 25th, are both making their first appearances in the top 25 this week.
The UCLA men, who have been idle since winning the USTA/ITA National Men's Team Indoor Championships on Feb. 18, received all eight first-place votes for 600 points. The Bruins' last two matches against UNLV and Southern California were rained out. Rounding out the top ten are: Stanford (8-1), Duke (5-1), TCU (7-1), Texas A&M (9-2), Washington (9-4), Tennessee (7-1),Georgia (5-1), Mississippi (6-2) and Florida (4-3). The Cardinal takes a break from dual action this weekend to compete in the Pacific Coast Doubles on Friday-Sunday in LaJolla.
The next 15 spots in the men's poll are: SMU, Pepperdine, Texas, Virginia Commonwealth, Illinois, South Alabama, (tie) Mississippi State and Oklahoma State, LSU, Baylor, Southern California, Miami (Fla.), Fresno State, Arizona State and Notre Dame. Notre Dame is the lone newcomer to the top 25 this week.
