HEAD COACH DAVID ESQUER: The Bears coach is in his second season at Cal and has a career record of 34-32 (.515)...Esquer, 35, became only the 10th coach in the long history of Cal baseball, which began in 1892, when he was hired June 10, 1999...Esquer replaced longtime Bear mentor Bob Milano, who retired May 17, 1999 after 22 years as the Bears head coach and 29 years involved in the Cal baseball program...Esquer came to Berkeley after serving as the top assistant at Pepperdine from 1996-99...prior to working at Pepperdine, he was the No. 2 assistant coach at Stanford under Mark Marquess from 1991-96...a shortstop at Stanford from 1984-87, Esquer was a starter on Stanford's 1987 College World Series championship team, earning All-Tournament honors after hitting .350 with six RBI in Omaha...he also earned All-Pac-10 Southern Division honors as a senior and went on to play professional baseball for four seasons with the Baltimore Orioles, California Angels and Milwaukee Brewers organizations...

BEAR NOTES: The 2001 Cal baseball team is 9-4 after splitting its last two games (lost 7-6 in 13 innings Feb. 23 at Long Beach State, won 5-3 Tuesday versus San Jose State)...Tuesday, Cal defeated the Spartans behind a three-run homer by freshman third baseman Conor Jackson and solid pitching from junior left-hander Jason Dennis and freshman right-hander Brian Montalbo...Jackson hit his first collegiate home run, a three-run shot to left-center field in the bottom of the first, giving him a team-leading 12 RBI on the season...the winning pitcher for the Bears was Dennis, who made his first appearance since May 9, 1999 after sitting out last season following Tommy John elbow surgery...Dennis had a predetermined pitch count (allowing him the win), throwing 3.0 innings with two hits, no runs, no walks and two strikeouts...Montalbo replaced Dennis and threw 4.7 innings (four hits, two runs, two walks, three strikeouts)...the Bears added an insurance run in the bottom of the fifth on an RBI double by freshman Brian Horwitz and produced another run in the seventh on an RBI single by freshman Noah Jackson...senior David Cash (1.3 innings, one hit, one unearned run, three strikeouts) was able to earn his second save of the season....on Feb. 23, Cal lost a hard-fought 7-6, four hour and thirty minute marathon at Long Beach State when Cash was not able to hold on to a 6-4 lead going into the bottom of the ninth...he had replaced starter Trevor Hutchinson, who had thrown 8.0 innings with 10 hits, four runs, four walks and eight strikeouts...Cash (3-1, 4.0 innings, five hits, two earned runs, four walks, one strikeout) gave up two runs in the bottom of the ninth on a wild pitch and an RBI ground out...he then settled down and held Long Beach State scoreless in the 10th, 11th and 12th innings, including getting out of a bases loaded and one out situation in the 10th, before giving up the winning run in the 13th...Jackson, junior Carson White, senior Rob Meyer (three RBI) and sophomore Brent Cook had two hits apiece for the Bears...Montalbo, a fourth-round draft pick by the Atlanta Braves out of Dimond High School in Anchorage, AK, has pitched well for Cal this season (1-0 with a 1.61 ERA and 20 strikeouts in 22.3 innings)...
