No. 8 Men's Golf Hosts 'Cleveland Golf Classic'

THE FACTS--The No. 8 USC men's golf team hosts the `Cleveland Golf Classic,' on Mon.-Tues. (Mar. 5-6) at Northranch Country Club in Westlake Village, Calif. The tournament will feature several ranked teams besides the Trojans (according to GolfWeek Magazine), including No. 9 TCU, No. 13 BYU, No. 11 Minnesota and No. 15 Oklahoma. The Pac-10 is also well represented, as UCLA, Oregon, Oregon State, Washington, Arizona State and California will compete. Other non conference teams include Pepperdine, Houston, Fresno State and New Mexico. The tournament will tee off the first 36 holes with a 7:30 a.m. shotgun start on Monday, then will begin the final 18 holes on Tuesday with a 7:30 a.m. start off holes one and 10. LAST YEAR'S TOURNAMENT--Arizona State rolled to the 2000 Cleveland Golf Classic team title, finishing with a four-over-par 856. Oregon's Ryan LaVoie won the individual title with a two-under-par 211. USC finished eighth and was led by Kevin Stadler, who finished tied for 19th.
SO FAR THIS YEAR--The Trojans are in the midst of their finest season since 1997, with two tournament wins already to their credit ... USC has finished in the top 6 of every tournament but one ... Troy won both the Taylor Made Red River Classic and the Ping Arizona and finished second at the Windon Memorial ... The Trojans had a team-low round of 271 at the Red River.
RANKINGS--USC moved to No. 8 in the latest Golfweek Team Rankings. It's the highest ranking for the Trojans in a collegiate golf poll since the 1997 season.
SENSATIONS--Senior Alex Kuyumjian and freshman Hunter Mahan have made big impacts for USC this season. Mahan, ranked 21st in the individual rankings, won back-to-back tournaments in the fall and leads the Trojans with a stroke average of 71.33. He has shot 204 twice this season and has a low round of 63 (the lowest-known round in Trojan history). Kuyumjian, ranked 2nd, won the Ping Arizona in his season debut after sitting out the fall due to academic concerns, then tied for seventh at the Waikoloa Intercollegiate. He has a stroke average of 71.50.
CONSISTENCY--Senior Nick Jones is having his finest year as a Trojan with a career-low stroke average of 72.86 and three top 10 finishes so far. Not far behind is junior Kevin Stadler, whose has a stroke average 73.53 and two top 10 finishes for the year. Sophomore David Oh has a stroke average of 74.19 and has a low round of 67.
CLEVELAND GOLF AT NORTHRANCH COUNTRY CLUB
One of the premier tournaments in collegiate golf, the Cleveland Golf Invitational Championship celebrates its 24th anniversary in 2001 as it hosts some of the country's best golf teams, all in the prestigious surroundings of North Ranch Country Club.
North Ranch Country Club, which is a par-71 course with a course rating of 73.0 and outstanding practice facilities, is the perfect setting for the event. The tournament has featured Oklahoma, Arizona, Stanford, Arkansas, Arizona State, Texas, Houston, UCLA and Pepperdine, among others.
Tournament director C.W. Johnson oversees the event, which has seen the participation of some of the biggest names in golf: Fred Couples, Corey Pavin, Tiger Woods and Trojan greats Dave Stockton, Jr., John Flannery, Brian Henninger and Sam Randolph, all 'young guns' on the Buy.com or PGA Tour.
