Aaron Simpson Advances At Yasar Dagu Wrestling Tournament in Turkey

March 2, 2001

ANKURA, Turkey -- Arizona State assistant wrestling coach Aaron Simpson won his first two matches at 187.25 pounds to advance out of his pool after the first day of competition at the Yasar Dagu Wrestling Tournament in Ankara, Turkey, Friday.

Simpson, a two-time All-American at ASU, was one of four members of the United States Men's Freestyle team to advance through today's competition with undefeated records. Simpson pinned his first opponent, Ezdogan of Turkey, before earning a 6-0 decision over Temirbayev from Kazakhstan.

In addition to his impressive collegiate wrestling resume, Simpson has achieved success at the international level as well. This past year he won the 2000 Sunkist Kids International Open title at 187 pounds and placed fourth at the 2000 U.S. Nationals.

While Simpson is competing in Turkey, the 2001 Pac-10 Champion Sun Devils are home preparing for the NCAA Wrestling Championships hosted by the University of Iowa in Iowa City, March 15-17. Eight ASU wrestlers have qualified for nationals this season, one short of the school record number of qualifiers set three times previous (1985, 1987, 1990).
