ASU Track and Field Improves NCAA Qualifying Marks at Iowa State Last Chance Indoor Meet

AMES, Iowa -- Led by distance runners Kelly MacDonald, Mary Duerbeck and Brianna Torres, who placed second, third and fifth in the women's 5000m, each member of Arizona State's six-athlete contingent competing at the Iowa State Last Chance Indoor Meet achieved or improved upon their NCAA qualifying marks Friday in Ames, Iowa, including four posted personal bests.
MacDonald, the ASU indoor record holder in the women's 5000m, earned runner-up honors with a season-best time of 16:23.21, improving upon her provisional qualifying mark set earlier this year at the Iowa State Classic by over 20 seconds. Duerbeck and Torres each turned in personal-best times, as Duerbeck finished just a tenth of a second behind MacDonald in 16:23.31. Duerbeck improved upon her previous all-time best and PQ by over 20 seconds as well, while Torres improved upon her outdoor PR by over 30 seconds, clocking in at 16:33.00.
Tony Galaviz posted a personal-best of his own, placing second in the 60m hurdles in a time of 7.81, improving upon his provisional qualifying status. Valerie Williams earned a PQ in the women's long jump with a season-best effort of 20 feet, 1.75 inches, while Adrienne Judie added to the personal-best parade with a mark of 50-11.5 in the women's shot put, good for sixth-place.
The rest of the ASU track and field squad will open the outdoor season Saturday, hosting the Bill Sawyer Invitational at Joe Sellah Track at Sun Angel Stadium. The Sun Devils will welcome individuals from the University of Arizona, Central Arizona, Glendale C.C., Paradise Valley C.C., Phoenix College and Scottsdale C.C. Field events begin at 9 a.m., while running events follow starting at 11 a.m.
