Men's Hoops Takes on Oregon State In Home Finale

ASU HOSTS OSU: The Arizona State men's basketball team (12-14, 4-11 in Pac-10), under third-year head coach Rob Evans, plays host to the Oregon State Beavers on Saturday, March 3, at 4 p.m. MST. The game will be carried on KFYI 550 AM in Phoenix and on Fox Sports Net. ASU completed its first season sweep of Oregon since 1992-93 with an 86-74 win on Thursday. ASU shot .596 from the field, its third-best shooting night of the season and the eighth-best by any Rob Evans team in his 255 games as a head coach. The Sun Devils also scored a season-high 55 second-half points. ASU swept the Oregon road trip back on Feb. 1-4 with wins over the Beavers (73-58) and the Ducks (99-72). ASU had just one road sweep in its previous 19 trips prior to its sweep at the Oregon schools, as it swept the Washington trip last year but before that had not swept a road trip since January of 1996. The wins at the Oregon schools is just the second Pac-10 road sweep in ASU's last 21 attempts. After starting Pac-10 0-7, ASU is 4-4 in its past eight games and will be attempting win all four games against the Oregon schools for the first time since 1992-93 and for just the second time in its 23 Pac-10 seasons.
VS. OSU: ASU swept OSU last year for the first time since 1996, and then increased its win streak to four over the Beavers with a 73-58 win on Feb. 1 in Corvallis. ASU shot .509 (28-of-55) from the field and held OSU to just 38 percent (19-of-50), including 8-of-24 (.333) in the first half, as five players notched double digits in scoring for ASU. Last year, Tommy Smith posted six blocks in a 75-64 win in Tempe. ASU is 13-4 vs. OSU in the past nine years and has won seven of the past eight in Tempe, losing only 70-61 in 1998. Rob Evans is 4-1 against OSU and 2-0 against Ritchie McKay, as Evans' Sun Devils beat Colorado State last year.
GOOD STOREY: Awvee Storey, a 6-6 junior who led the Pac-10 in offensive rebounds last year, is averaging a league-leading 9.2 boards per game and has 92 (3.6 pg) on offense. Storey also is the only Pac-10 player averaging a double-double in league play (13.4 pts./10.1 rebs.). His 9.2 rebounds per game is the best by a Sun Devil since Alton Lister averaged 9.7 rebounds in 1980-81. Only one Sun Devil has led the Pac-10 in rebounding, Lester Neal in 1992-93 with 9.0 boards per game. He also leads the Pac-10 in double-doubles with 10.
SOPHOMORE TOMMY SMITH: Tommy Smith matched a Pac-10 record for field goal percentage by making all 11 shots against Washington on Feb. 10, and has been playing well since mid-January. Smith is averaging 12.3 points in the past 12 games and had a career-high 24 points vs. the Huskies. His 11-of-11 effort put him in the Pac-10 record book for field goal accuracy with Steve Johnson of OSU (13-of-13 vs. Hawaii-Hilo on Dec. 5, 1979), Marques Johnson of UCLA (11-of-11 vs. Cal on Feb. 27, 1976) and Bryan Bracey of UO (10-of-10 vs. UW on Jan. 20, 2000). Smith has scored in double-digits in 10 of the past 12 games after posting double digits in just five games last season (just two Pac-10 games). He had 17 points vs. Oregon Thursday and in his past seven games, he is 38-of-53 (.717) from the field and is averaging 12.7 points.
IN THE CLASSROOM: The Sun Devil men's hoops team had one of its best semesters last fall. Seven Sun Devils posted at least a 3.0 grade point average last semester. One player's academic effort that is worth noting is sophomore Justin Allen, who passed all nine hours with a 3.33 grade point average. Sophomore Shawn Redhage, a construction science major, is an All-Academic candidate with a 3.28 cumulative GPA. Overall, the 14 players on the team had a 2.7 grade point average.
DEVIL THREE-DOT DATA: ASU is outrebounding Pac-10 foes by 6.1 boards per game and has outrebounded 19 of its 26 opponents...Alton Mason has made 73-of-69 (.830) free throws in the past 16 games, including a 17-of-19 (.895) effort against Oregon that was one make short of the school record...sophomore Shawn Redhage is shooting 82.8 percent (135-of-163) from the free throw line in his 58-game career...Chad Prewitt is 12-of-29 (.414) from the three-point stripe this year...ASU is averaging 15.03 offensive rebounds this year, the best mark in the league. ASU led the Pac-10 last year at 15.78 per game.
ROB EVANS: Rob Evans (131-124/.514) is in his third season in 2000-2001 (ninth overall) as the head basketball coach at Arizona State after being hired on April 7, 1998. The 1997 SEC Coach of the Year spent six seasons at Ole Miss, compiling an 86-81 (.515) record. He led the Rebels to a 42-16 record in his final two seasons, winning two SEC West titles, and led Ole Miss to back-to-back 20-win seasons for the first time since 1937-38. The 54-year old Evans is a 1968 graduate of New Mexico State, where he captained two NCAA Tournament teams, is a 1989 inductee of the NMSU Athletic Hall of Fame and was named to the school's All-Time Basketball team. He is 45-43 (.511) in his third year at ASU and is 87-59 (.596) in the past five seasons.
