Men's Tracksters Chase Last Chance Marks
March 2, 2001
AMES, Iowa - On Friday, freshman Trevor Woods, junior Cody Howell and senior Rian Ingrim made last attempts at NCAA indoor qualifying marks at the Cyclone National Track and Field Qualifier at Iowa State University.
In the pole vault, Woods turned in his second 17-foot performance of this indoor season and his career, clearing 17-0 to tie for fourth overall, while Howell tied for eighth at 16-0. University of Northern Iowa's Jacob Pauli won the event with a mark of 18-4 3/4.
The former prep All-American Woods finished his debut season for the Ducks with a season best of 17-2 3/4 from last weekend at the Mountain Pacific Championships that exactly met the NCAA provisional mark. That mark was approximately 1 3/4 inches short of a height (17-4 1/2) that would have likely qualified for the collegiate indoor finale. UO teammate Howell finished with a season best of 16-4 3/4 from earlier in the season
In the shot put, senior Rian Ingrim claimed his first NCAA provisional mark of his career with a throw of 57-5 (17.50 meters) that exactly equaled the NCAA provisional standard in Friday's meet, although he would probably need a throw close to 60 feet for an actual NCAA invite. The Lake Oswego's throw was a 1 1/2-inch improvement from his previous best of 57-3 1/2 from last weekend's Mountain Pacific Championships. He finished fifth in Friday's event, as Iowa State's Jamie Beyer took top honors with a throw of 61-6 1/4.
Although they didn't compete this weekend, a pair of additional Duck NCAA provisional qualifiers, sophomores Jason Hartmann (men's 5,000, 14:05.72) and Jason Boness (high jump, 7-2 1/4), will await word early next week whether they have been selected to the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships, scheduled for March 9-10 at the University of Arkansas' Randal Tyson Track and Field Complex. This week, Boness and Hartmann ranked 10th and 14th nationally in their events, with each field having a minimum of 17 entrants or more.
On Saturday, Duck seniors Katie Crabb and Holly Speight will make final tries at improving their NCAA provisional marks in the mile and pole vault at the Nebraska Last Chance Meet. Crabb owns a mile season best of 4:46.38 and hopes to run at least 1-2 seconds faster to improve her qualifying chances, while Speight will probably need to clear a height at least four inches higher than her current season best 12-6.
