Baseball Sweeps Doubleheader From UC Riverside

The Washington baseball team improved its record to 5-1 with a doubleheader sweep ofUC Riverside Saturday at Riverside Sports Complex. The Huskies won game one, 12-5,before taking the nightcap, 12-2.

In game one, the Huskies got four runs batted in from left fielder Jay Garthwaite and threefrom right fielder Tyler Davidson inside of the first four innings as the Dawgs jumped outto an early lead. Garthwaite finished the game 3-for-4 with three RBI and a double. Centerfielder Brandon Jacobson went 3-for-4 with the Huskies' first home run of the season, asolo shot in the fifth.

Tila Reynolds finished game one with three hits in three at bats while Jefferson Thiel andMike Wagner each had two hits, with Wagner doubling twice. Riverside got three hits fromsophomore Randy Blood.

Sophomore Sean White (2-0) fanned eight batters in five innings for his second victory ofthe year, allowing four runs on seven hits. Freshman reliever Trevor Gibson allowed onlyone run over the last four innings for the save in his first career outing. UCR starter JulioFernandez (1-1) took the game one loss.

In game two, Garthwaite opened the scoring in the second when he led off by belting a linedrive over the center field wall. In the third, Garthwaite's single drove in two more runs togive UW a 3-0 lead. The Huskies made it 5-0 in the fourth when Andre Marshall doubledto score Duggan Moran and then scored on a single from Bryan Johnson.

Husky freshman starter Clay Johnson (1-0) no-hit the Highlanders through the first fourinnings, but UCR came up with two runs on three hits. Adam Seuss doubled and scoredon a Tim Faulker single and Brian Wahlbrink, who had walked, scored on a single fromBlood.

Johnson picked up his first college win, allowing three hits and two runs while striking outfour in five innings. Chris Smith (2-4) worked four innings in the loss. UCR fell to 4-13on the season with the two losses.

Husky sophomore Bryan Johnson capped a seven-run seventh in game two with a grandslam. Garthwaite finished the doubleheader 5-for-7 with seven RBI.

The Huskies and UCR are scheduled to play a 1:00 p.m. game Sunday to close out theseries.
