Beavers Win In 10th Inning

March 3, 2001

CORVALLIS, Ore. - Brian Barden singled home the tying run and scored the winning run in the 10th inning Saturday afternoon as Oregon State beat San Francisco 6-5 in non-league baseball at Goss Stadium at Coleman Field.

OSU (8-6 overall, 0-0 Pacific-10) won for the eighth time in its last 11 games.

The Beavers and Dons (8-6, 0-0 West Coast), who have traded one-run wins in the first two games this weekend, wrap up their series Sunday at 1 p.m. The game can be heard on KLOO-AM (1340).

On Saturday, Oregon State won in its last at-bat for the fourth time this season.

'We stayed with it,' OSU head coach Pat Casey said. 'The good thing today was that when things weren't going good, we didn't get stagnant. When things didn't go the way we wanted, we kept on coming. Fortunately, our pitching kept us in the game and our guys kept hanging in there and battling.'

The Beavers trailed 5-4 going into the bottom of the 10th after San Francisco's Luke Gradishar lofted a sacrifice fly to centerfield against OSU reliever Stephen Copeland to score Steve Booth, who had started the inning with a single. But Curtis Davis started the Beavers' half of the inning with a double to left-center off USF reliever Kevin Rose, and pinch runner Ben McGrew advanced to third on Chris Biles' flyout to center.

The Dons brought in closer David Seccombe, who had saved USF's 3-2 win on Friday. But, with the infield drawn in, Barden grounded a single up the middle to score McGrew and tie the game 5-5.

Zach Gordon walked after being given new life at the plate by a dropped foul ball, and Barden and Gordon pulled off a double steal as Jake Postlewait struck out for the second out. Bryan Ingram then hit a sharp grounder to Don shorstop Jared Carvalho, who booted the ball as Barden trotted home with the winning run.

The two-run 10th inning ended a streak of offensive frustration for Oregon State, which had scored three times in the first inning but managed only one run in the next eight frames.

'We're just not swinging the bats as well as we're capable right now,' Casey said. 'Those are the times when you need guys to pick you up on the mound, and Craig Hays and Stephen Copeland did that for us today. They came in and gave us a chance.'

Hays and Copeland combined to allow just one run on five hits in 6 2/3 innings after San Francisco tied the game against Beaver starter Mark McLemore. Hays allowed three hits and two walks while striking out two in 3 2/3 innings, Copeland allowed the 10th-inning run but gave up just two hits and no walks while striking out three in three innings.

The Beavers had jumped to a 3-0 lead in the first. After Ingram was hit by a pitch and Will Hudson singled, Josh Carter moved his hitting streak to 12 games with a run-scoring double down the leftfield line, Andy Jarvis then drove in a run with a groundout and Davis added a sacrifice fly.

Hudson was 2-for-4 and Biles was 2-for-5 for the Beavers. For San Francisco, Carvalho was 3-for-5 and Taggert Bozied was 2-for-4 with a run-scoring double.
