Crabb Runs NCAA Automatic Mile Time at Nebraska
March 3, 2001
LINCOLN, Neb. - University of Oregon senior distance runner Katie Crabb will look forward to one more weekend in her final season for the Ducks, running an NCAA automatic qualifying mark Saturday in the mile at the Nebraska Last Chance Meet.
The Chico, Calif., native won Saturday's race in a four-second personal best (4:42.19), edging Oklahoma State's Alexandra Lindquist (second, 4:46.10).
More importantly, her time easily met the NCAA automatic standard of 4:43.40, and guarantees an automatic entry in next weekend's NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships, scheduled for Fri.-Sat., March 9-10 at the University of Arkansas' Randal Tyson Track Complex in Fayetteville, Ark. Prior to this weekend, her qualifying status was in doubt since she ranked 23rd nationally with her provisional mark of 4:46.38 from the Cannon IV Classic in Indianapolis, Feb. 3.
'Katie ran a controlled race and followed the rabbit early,' Oregon women's coach Tom Heinonen said, ' but when the pace slowed at the half she took control and never looked back. This was the race we were looking for last week at Virginia Tech, so we were glad we got the chance to run on this fast, new track in Lincoln. She now has six days to get ready for the prelims at NCAA's and won't have to wait for a call this week (confirming her entry from the NCAA).'
An All-American already in the 1,500, Crabb opened Saturday's race with a first quarter split of 67.8 seconds, and followed with 800 and 1,200 splits of 2:19.2 and 3:30.5, respectively, and led the last half of the race by herself.
Her mark Saturday also moved her to fourth all-time for the Ducks, after ranking 10th previously with her previous season best, and was Oregon's fastest mile in 13 years.
Senior teammate Holly Speight also traveled the University of Nebraska meet, but failed to improve her rank on the NCAA provisional list. The Salem native finished fifth in the pole vault with a final mark of 11-10 3/4 (3.62m), just short of her season best of 12-6 from the Great Northwest Indoor Classic in Portland, Jan. 28.
Early next week, a pair of Duck men's provisional qualifiers, sophomores Jason Boness (high jump, 7-2 1/4) and Jason Hartmann (men's 5,000, 14:05.72), will await word whether they have been selected in their events. This past week, Boness and Hartmann ranked 10th and 14th nationally in their events, with each field having a minimum of 17 entrants or more. Two other Ducks, freshman Trevor Woods (pole vault, 17-2 3/4) and senior Rian Ingrim (shot put, 57-5), also own NCAA provisional marks that will most likely not make the NCAA indoor fields.
The Duck men's and women's track and field teams open their outdoor home schedule at Hayward Field in two weekends, at the Oregon Preview, Sat., March 17. Action will begin at 11:40 a.m. and admission is free.
