Softball Sweeps Doubleheader Against South Florida

LOS ANGELES - The top-ranked UCLA softball team swept a Saturday doubleheader with South Florida at Easton Softball Stadium with scores of 10-0 (5 innings) and 5-3.
Tournament rules required the Bruins to bat as the visiting team in game one, and the Bruins scored four runs in the top of the first inning. A single by Natasha Watley and walks to Stacey Nuveman and Courtney Dale loaded the bases for freshman Claire Sua, who connected on her second grand slam of the season.
In the third, the Bruins added a run on an RBI single by second baseman Monique Mejia. Nuveman hit a two-run home run in the top of the fourth, a blast to left field for her seventh HR of the season. It was also the 58th career home run for Nuveman, giving her sole posession of fourth place on the NCAA's all-time list for career home runs.
That gave UCLA a 7-0 lead going in to the sixth inning. The Bruins added three more runs in the top of the fifth on an RBI double by Freed, a sacrifice fly by Tairia Mims and an RBI single by Nuveman.
In the second game of the doubleheader, the Bruins opened the scoring with an RBI single by Nuveman, then scored four runs in the third on an RBI single by Watley and a three-run homer by Courtney Dale.
Freshman Keira Goerl improved to 8-0 on the season, pitching four innings while striking out three. Dale entered the circle in the top of the fifth and earned the save with four strikeouts.
The Easton Classic is scheduled to conclude on Sunday with two doubleheaders at UCLA's Easton Stadium and one at Matador Field on the campus of Cal State Northridge. At Easton Stadium, the 9 am doubleheader will feature No. 14 Oregon State and South Florida. The Bruins are scheduled to take the field at 1:30 pm in a doubleheader against UNLV. In Northridge, the host Matadors will face of against Colorado State.
