March 3, 2001
PULLMAN, Wash. -- Junior J Locklier (Rock Hill, S.C.) and freshman Marcus Moore (Inglewood, Calif.) each recorded double-doubles to lead Washington State to a 79-61 win over Washington in Pacific-10 Conference men's basketball Saturday afternoon.
Moore tied the Huskies' (9-19, 3-13) Michael Johnson with a game-high 18 points and added a season and career-high 10 rebounds. He also tied Washington's C.J. Massingale with a game-high five assists and added two steals.
Locklier tallied 16 points and a season and career-high 12 boards. Sophomore Milton Riley (Gardena, Calif.) also recorded a career-high in rebounds with eight and is averaging 7.3 boards in his last three games.
Sophomore Jerry McNair (Torrance, Calif.) poured in 16 points off the bench and is averaging 20 points in his last three games.
Washington State (12-14, 5-11) doubled its win total of a year ago. The Cougars led 29-27 at the half and before shooting a blistering 70 percent from the field in the second half to pull away for the win.
'This is a big win for Washington State, any time you can beat an in-state rival,' WSU head coach Paul Graham said. 'We came out running in the second half and really opened up the floor. We loosened up and started making shots.'
WSU led 35-32 before going on a 9-2 run to increase its advantage to 44-34 with 14:39 left in the game. Five different Cougars scored during the spurt, capped by a three-pointer from sophomore David Adams (Tacoma).
With just over eight minutes left, the Huskies were still hanging around, down 59-50. However, WSU scored the next six points, capped by a three-pointer from senior Cedric Clark (Birmingham, Ala.) to take a commanding 65-50 advantage with 6:34 remaining. Washington never got closer than 12 points the rest of the way.
Washington State plays host to UCLA next Thursday at Friel Court. Game time is 7 p.m. The Cougars are 10-2 at Friel Court this season, the most wins in Pullman since the 1994-95 season.
