Beavers Fall In Finale

March 4, 2001

CORVALLIS, Ore. - Oregon State spent the final five innings trying to catch San Francisco and came up short Sunday afternoon, falling 4-3 in non-league baseball at Goss Stadium at Coleman Field. All three games of the weekend series were decided by one run, with the Beavers (8-7 overall, 0-0 Pacific-10) dropping two of them.

OSU resumes its homestand this week against Washington, meeting the Huskies in non-league games Tuesday at 2 p.m. and Wednesday at 2 p.m.

The start of Sunday's game was delayed for almost two hours by rain before the teams zipped through a scoreless first three innings. San Franicsco (9-6, 0-0 West Coast) then took the lead for good with three runs - including an unearned run - in the top of the fourth, getting run-scoring singles from Taggert Bozied and Jesse Foppert and a sacrifice fly by Nick Tarbat.

Oregon State picked up a single run in the fourth inning and then got a sacrifice fly by Josh Howard in the fifth to pull within 3-2. The Dons went up 4-2 on Greg Moore's run-scoring single in the top of the seventh.

OSU's best chance to pull even came in the bottom of the seventh. Brian Barden led off with a drive to right-centerfield, but USF centerfielder Jason Howard made a diving catch in the gap to rob Barden of an extra-base hit. Seth Pietsch, the freshman outfielder making his first start, then lofted a home run to left to make it 4-3 and Zach Gordon followed with a double down the leftfield line.

That was all for USF starter Jeremy Kinney, and reliever Chris Thogerson walked pinch-hitter Chris Biles to put the go-ahead run on base. The Beavers' Bryan Ingram then went after the first pitch from Thogerson and grounded into an inning-ending double play.

Oregon State again put the tying run on base in both the eighth and ninth innings, but was unable to advance the runner any further than first base.

Beaver starter Thad Johnson was pinned with the loss despite turning in a complete-game performance. Johnson allowed 10 hits and walked just one, striking out six.

Oregon State rightfielder Josh Carter pushed his hitting streak to 13 games with a fourth-inning single. Curtis Davis was 2-for-3 for the Beavers, who were limited to six hits by Kinney and Thogerson.
