No. 22 Oregon Softball Loses To Minnesota, New Mexico At Worth Invitational
March 4, 2001
FULLERTON, Calif. - Hampered by injuries, the No. 22 University of Oregon softball team (16-13) lost its final two games at the Worth Invitational in Fullerton, Calif. Sunday. The Ducks played back to back games against Minnesota and New Mexico without starting second baseman Alyssa Laux and fell 3-1to the Golden Gophers before falling 3-0 to New Mexico.
Laux, who was second on the team with an overall batting average of .387 and 11 runs, sustained a concussion on day one of the tournament and is expected to return to action next week. Oregon made adjustments both offensively and defensively, but wasn't able to get timely hits, particularly with runners in scoring position.
'This has been a problem for us all season,' Oregon head coach Rick Gamez said. 'We need somebody who can step up and make big plays when we have runners in scoring position. If we can get over that hump, we're going to be fine.'
In Game 1, Minnesota struck early when lead off hitter Tammi Hays scored after a single by Angel Braden. The Ducks limited the Golden Gophers to just one run in the inning, but weren't able to establish their own rally. In the top of the fifth inning, Minnesota scored two more runs to take a 3-0 lead.
Oregon did respond in the bottom of the fifth when Lynsey Haij was hit by a pitch and reached second when Missy Coe was thrown out at first on the next at bat. Senior Triawn Custer's single to left field drove in Haij, but it was Oregon's only run of the game and Minnesota held on for the win. Sophomore pitcher Andrea Vidlund (6-3) took the loss for Oregon.
The Ducks held New Mexico scoreless for four innings in Game 2, but were unable to establish their offense. New Mexico scored a run in the top of the fifth and two in the sixth to shut Oregon out. Junior Connie McMurren (6-5) tallied the loss.
