UC Riverside Avoids Sweep With 11-6 Win

RIVERSIDE, Calif. - Despite collecting 17 hits, the Washington baseball team lost to UC Riverside, 11-6,Sunday at the Riverside Sports Complex as the Highlanders avoided a four-game seriessweep.
The Huskies (5-2) fell victim to a seven-run second inning and never could get back in thegame, leaving the bases loaded in the third and eighth innings and leaving two runnersaboard three other times.
Sophomore Tila Reynolds had three hits, including a home run, and sophomoresBryan Johnson and Brandon Jacobson each had three hits to pace the Huskies' hittingattack. Tyler Davidson, Michael Done and Mike Wagner each contributed three hits.
Sophomore left fielder Jay Garthwaite continued his hot weekend Sunday, belting a three-run homer in the top of the first inning. The Highlanders, however, would mount acomeback in the second, posting seven runs off of UW starter Randy Vanderplow (0-1). Atwo-run double from Scott Powis and a three-run double from Randy Blood were thehighlights of UCR's seven-run second inning.
After the Highlanders (5-13) posted two more runs in the third to go ahead 9-3, theHuskies cut into the lead when Reynolds hit a two-run homer in the fourth, making it 9-5.
Mike Garner (1-1) earned the win for UCR, allowing four earned runs on 12 hits over fiveand two-thirds innings.
The Huskies return to Seattle Sunday night, but won't stick around for long as they travelto Corvallis to face Oregon State in a two-game, non-conference series Tuesday andWednesday. Next Friday, Washington opens it home slate against Southern Utah in thefirst of a three-game series at Husky Ballpark
