Carter Extends Hitting Streak

March 6, 2001

CORVALLIS, Ore. - Oregon State's Josh Carter extended his hitting streak to 14 games but the Beavers lost to Washington 10-7 in non-league baseball Tuesday afternoon at Goss Stadium at Coleman Field. Carter, who was 3-for-5 with a home run and three runs batted in, has at least one hit in every game he's played this season.

OSU (8-8 overall, 0-0 Pacific-10) and Washington (6-2) finish their two-game series Wednesday at 2 p.m.

The Beavers spent much of Tuesday's game trying to come back after falling behind 5-0 in the first inning and 9-3 in the fourth. Carter's two-run homer in the fifth inning pulled Oregon State within 9-5, and OSU reliever Jed Mitchell allowed just one run in four innings to give the Beavers a chance to get back in the game.

Oregon State threatened Washington's lead in the eighth inning, as Seth Pietsch led off with a homer - the freshman's second in as many games. Pinch-hitter Levi Webber then singled and pinch runner Will Hudson moved to third on Kerisi Reynolds' double off the wall in left-centerfield.

That was all for UW reliever Mike Bomar, and Shawn Kohn came in to strike out Eric Stark on a full-count pitch. Bryan Ingram was then hit by a pitch to load the bases, and Josh Carter singled to left to drive in a run and keep the bases full.

Curtis Davis then fouled off five two-strike pitches, including one that the Beavers argued had hit Davis, it was ruled the pitch had hit Davis' bat for a foul ball. Davis foul-tipped another pitch, but Husky catcher Jefferson Thiel held on for the strikeout and the second out of the inning. Andy Jarvis then grounded out to first base to end the frame.

Jarvis went 3-for-5 with a double for the Beavers, Davis was 2-for-4 with a double and Reynolds was 2-for-5 with a double. It was quite a day for the Reynolds family in the first collegiate matchup between Kerisi and his older brother, Washington shortstop Tila Reynolds, as Tila homered and doubled.

Mitchell had his finest outing of the season for OSU with his four innings of work, allowing one run on two hits and two walks while striking out two.

Stark, OSU's centerfielder, returned to the lineup for the first time since suffering a shoulder injury Feb. 15 and went 1-for-3 with a walk.
