Casey Myers Goes 4-for-5 In Baseball's 17-3 Trouncing of Oral Roberts

March 6, 2001

TEMPE, Ariz. -- Senior All-American catcher Casey Myers went 4-for-5 with a home run, two runs scored and two RBI to lead the No. 8 Arizona State Sun Devil baseball team to a 17-3 trouncing of Oral Roberts Tuesday evening at Packard Stadium.

The win over the Golden Eagles improved ASU's record to 14-4-1. Oral Roberts fell to 8-3 with the loss. It was ASU fifth win in 2001 over a team that advanced to the NCAA tournament last year. The Golden Eagles were 49-15 last year with a 26-1 conference mark.

Andy Torres picked up the win on the mound for the Sun Devils to improve to 6-1 on the year. The junior scattered five hits and two runs over 6.1 innings. Angel Ramirez and Ty Johnson combined to give up just one run over the remainder of the game to lock up the win.

'People are going to look at this win and see the name Oral Roberts and not realize how good of a team and program they are. They won 49 games last year and are a regular tournament team now,' said ASU head coach Pat Murphy. 'We played well tonight and it is a really good bounce back from the LSU series. We played hard and played together. It was also good to get some younger players some playing time.'

The offensive production began with a two-run home run to right field from Myers in the first, and literally didn't end tell the last pitch. Myers' two-run blast to right field was the first of a career-high tying four-hit night. He finished 4-for-5 with two runs scored and two RBI. The senior All-American now has a hit in 16 of ASU's 19 games, 15 of which have been multi-hit affairs. His home run gives him three on the year. With 35 RBI on the year he now has 241 in his career, nearing the Pac-10 and ASU record of 283.

The Sun Devils used three big offensive innings to put the Golden Eagles away. A four-run fourth was followed by a three-run fifth and a seven-run outburst in the sixth. Three consecutive singles by Rod Allen, Jonah Martin and Steve Garrabrants in the fourth set the table for junior center fielder Chris Duffy who cleared the bases with a one-out triple to right center field. Freshman first baseman Jeremy West brought home a run in the fifth with his team-leading fourth home run of the year, and the scoring didn't stop there. ASU sent 13 batters to the plate in the sixth, collecting seven runs off eight hits to take the commanding 16-1 lead. Garrabrants plated two with his third triple of the year.

Besides Myers' four-hit game, several Devils enjoyed great nights at the plate. Duffy collected two hits and drove home a career high four runs. Garrabrants was 3-for-6 with two runs and two RBI, while West was 2-for-3 to raise his season batting average to an even .400 (20x50). Mike Lopez (2x4) and Rod Allen (2x5) each reached the multi-hit department with two hits apiece. Junior catcher Cesar Castillo and redshirt freshman Lucas Weber recorded their first career hits in the win.

The Sun Devils and Golden Eagles will meet Wednesday (weather barring) in a 7 p.m. contest at Packard Stadium. Oral Roberts will throw ace Michael Rogers with ASU still yet to announce a starter.
