The Stanford Cardinal will send 15 athletes (10 men, 5 women) to compete in the 2001 NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships at The Randal Tyson Track Center on the campus of the University of Arkansas ... The Cardinal men will feature nine runners (Ryan Carroll, Mark Hassell, Seth Hejny, Gabe Jennings, Evan Kelty, Louie Luchini, Jonathon Riley, Don Sage and Jonathan Stevens), and one high jumper (Michael Ponikvar) ... Last year, Stanford's men's team finished second to Arkansas ... Stanford tallied 52 points compared to 69.5 for the Razorbacks ... Jennings won the 2000 indoor mile title (3:59.46), while the men's distance medley relay team of Jennings, Kelty, Michael Stember and Riley won the NCAA title in 9:28.83, a time which not only eclipsed Stanford's American record but also the world record established in 1998 by Washington State ... The Cardinal women will send five runners (Ashley Couper, Lauren Fleshman, Lindsay Hyatt, Danielle Spurlock, and Elena Villarreal) ... Last year, the Cardinal women's team finished eleventh with 15 points ... UCLA won the national championship with 51 points ... The distance medley relay team of Sally Glynn, Jayna Smith, Hyatt, and Fleshman ran to victory with a school record time of 11:01.56.
The battle for the men's team title is expected to be extremely close this year ... According to Trackwire, five teams are solid contenders (Arkansas, Alabama, LSU, Stanford, and Tennessee) ... In fact, in their most recent poll, Trackwire tallied 41 points for Arkansas, 40 for Alabama and 39 for Stanford ... Stanford is one of three Pac-10 teams ranked in the Top-25 ... Washington is ranked ninth and Arizona is 15th ... The Cardinal women are ranked 25th in the national poll ... South Carolina is favored to win the national women's indoor title ... Stanford is one of three conference schools ranked in the nation's Top 25 with UCLA (fourth) and Arizona (23rd).

Ryan Carroll - Will compete as an alternate on the distance medley relay team ... A veteran middle distance runner ... A member of the outdoor distance medley relay team which posted a time of 9:32.86, the fastest collegiate time in 2000 ... History major.
Ashley Couper - A member of the distance medley relay team which qualified for the NCAA's with a time of 11:19.06 at the Razorback Invitational ... A transfer from the University of Vermont.
Lauren Fleshman - One of the top, young distance runners in the nation ... A five-time All-American ... The American junior record holder in the 5,000 meters (outdoors) ... Slated to compete in the mile and as a member of the distance medley relay team ... Qualified for the NCAA's in the mile with a time of 4:39.69, a career-best, second-best in school history, and currently ranked fourth indoors among collegiate runners ... Human Biology major.
Mark Hassell - a member of the distance medley relay team, which gained entry into the NCAA's this year with a time of 9:38.50 at last weekend's Notre Dame Invitational ... Gained All-America honors as a member of the distance medley relay team in 1999 ... That year, helped the Cardinal to a fifth place in the dmr with a then school record time of 9:36.99 ... Comparative Studies in Race and Ethnicity major.
Seth Hejny - Qualified for the NCAA Indoor Championships with a time of 8:02.76 in the 3,000 meters at last weekend's Notre Dame Invitational ... His career-best time in the 3,000 meters is fifth-best in school history ... Also a standout as a member of the nationally-ranked cross country and track teams ... Engineering major.
Lindsay Hyatt - Another of Stanford's young, talented distance runners ... Has already established herself as one of Stanford's best ever middle distance runners ... A two-time All-American ... Gained All-America honors on the NCAA indoor distance medley relay team (11:05.56) last year ... Also the school record holder indoors in the 800 meters ... Will again compete on the distance medley relay team ... Undeclared major.
Gabe Jennings - One of the nation's best distance runners ... A seven-time All-American and a member of the 2000 United States Olympic team in the 1,500 meters ... The 2000 NCAA outdoor champion in the 1,500 meters and the 2000 NCAA indoor champion in the mile ... Captured first place honors in the 1,500 meters at the U.S. Olympic Trials in 2000 ... Won the 2000 NCAA indoor mile title (3:59.46), less than 22 hours after helping Stanford win the NCAA indoor title in the distance medley relay in world record time of 9:28.83 ... Jennings also placed seventh in the 3,000 meters (8:04.96) at the 2000 NCAA Indoors ... Qualified for the 2001 Indoors in the mile (4:00.92) and as a member of the distance medley relay team ... Has run the indoor mile in 3:59.46, third all-time in school history ... Music major.
Evan Kelty - An alternate on the distance medley relay team ... A world record holder as a member of the 2000 NCAA indoor champion distance medley relay team ... One of the top sprinters in the 100, 200 and 400 meters in the Pac-10 ... Urban Studies major.
Louis Luchini - One of the up-and-coming stars in collegiate track & field ... Qualified for the NCAA's with a time of 13:53.87 in the 5,000 meters, a career-best and sixth-best in school history ... His time is currently ranked fifth in the country among collegiate runners ... Established his qualifying mark at the Iowa State Invitational ... Finished the 2000 outdoor season as the #1-ranked 10,000 meter freshman in the NCAA ... Economics major.
Michael Ponikvar - Qualified for the NCAA's with a leap of 7-2 1/4 in the high jump at the Razorback Invitational ... Currently ranked 14th in the nation among NCAA qualifiers ... Redshirted last year to train for the Olympics ... The 1999 Pac-10 champion ... Second all-time in the indoor high jump at Stanford at 7-2 1/2 ... Engineering major.
Jonathon Riley - One of the prime favorites to win the indoor 3,000 meter title ... Has run a school record 7:48.79 (fourth fastest ever by a collegian), which easily beat the previous record of 7:51.95 by Brad Hauser in 1999 ... Also slated to compete in the 5,000 meters with a national qualifying time of 13:52.20, ranked #3 indoor collegiately this year ... That time is fifth-best in school history ... An eleven-time All-American ... During the 2000 indoor season, ran the anchor leg on the world record setting distance medley relay team at 9:28.83 ... Gained All-America honors with a ninth-place showing in the indoor 3,000 meters at 8:06.45 in 2000 ... Art major.
Donald Sage - Entered in the mile, and as a member of the distance medley relay team ... Qualified in the mile with a career-best time of 4:01.34 at the Razorback Invitational ...
