UCLA To Host NCAA West Regional Women's Gymnastics Championship
March 7, 2001
LOS ANGELES - The defending NCAA champion and top-ranked UCLA gymnastics team will host the 2001 NCAA West Regional Women's Gymnastics Championship in Pauley Pavilion (UCLA, Los Angeles, CA, 310-825-4321) on Saturday, Apr. 7. The meet begins at 6:00 pm.
The UCLA Bruins, led by three-time NCAA Coach of the Year Valorie Kondos Field, won the 2000 NCAA West Regional Championship a year ago to qualify for the national championships, where they hit all 48 routines over two days to win their second NCAA team title in four years.
UCLA's chances of repeating their regional and national titles in 2001 look good with the return of defending NCAA uneven bars champion and all-around runner-up Mohini Bhardwaj. Bhardwaj, who won the all-around, bars and beam at last year's regional. The Bruins also return All-Americans Onnie Willis and Kristin Parker. Three 2000 Olympic competitors join the Bruin squad this season - Jamie Dantzscher and Kristen Maloney from the U.S. and Yvonne Tousek from Canada.
Teams from five other universities, plus five at-large individual all-around competitors and four at-large individual event specialists, will compete for team and individual titles. Most importantly, the top two teams and the top two all-around competitors (not on an advancing team) from each of the six regionals will qualify for the NCAA Championships, which will be held in Athens, GA Apr. 19-21. The teams and individuals competing at the regional will be determined based on rankings Mar. 26.
Tickets for the regional championships can be purchased at UCLA's Central Ticket Office, (310) UCLA-WIN. Reserved tickets are $9 for adults and $7 for youth. General admission prices are $6 for adults and $4 for youth.
