BEAR NOTES: The 2001 Cal baseball team is 10-7 after losing three of its last four games...the Bears went 1-2 against Bay Area rival Stanford in three tightly contested non-conference games at Sunken Diamond, falling 3-1 Mar. 2, winning 3-2 Mar. 3 and losing 3-2 on a solo homer in the bottom of the 10th Mar. 7...sandwiched between the Stanford games, Cal lost a 5-4 contest Mar. 6 versus Nevada...the Bears have now been involved in nine one-run games this season, going 4-5 in those contests...several close games is an indication on the Bears pitching strength (3.36 team ERA, opponents are batting .243) and the need for improved offensive production (.271 team batting average, .262 average with runners in scoring position)...freshman outfielder Brian Horwitz has been hot of late, batting .323 (20-for-62) with a team-best five doubles, a triple and five RBI...Horwitz is currently on an 12-game hitting streak from Feb. 9 (16-for-50, .320, 5-2B, 3B, four RBI) and went 3-for-13 in the Stanford series with the game winning RBI Mar. 3...sophomore Ben Conley had a big game Mar. 7 at Stanford...Conley, in his first start in left field this season, got his first collegiate hit as the lead-off batter in the top of the first inning and went on to get three of Cal's six hits, going 3-for-5 with an RBI...despite giving up the game-winning homer in the bottom of the 10th against Stanford, freshman right-hander Matt Brown was outstanding against the Cardinal, pitching in all three games, earning a save Mar. 3 (0.7 inning, one strikeout with bases loaded) and not giving up a hit until the home run...Brown had five strikeouts and no walks in his 5.0 innings against Stanford...junior right-hander Trevor Hutchinson has been solid for the Bears all season long, leading the team in strikeouts (40) and innings pitched (35.0) with a complete game Feb. 8 against BYU and a career-high 12 strikeouts Feb. 16 at Loyola Marymount...
