March 8, 2001

Los Angeles - The 12th-ranked USC women's tennis team won two out of three doubles matches and four out of six singles matches to defeat 18th-ranked William & Mary, 5-2, Thursday afternoon at USC's Marks Tennis Stadium.

With the victory, the Trojans improve to 10-3. The Tribe of William and Mary drop to 5-5.

The match was an intense battle from the start, with USC's tandem of Jewel Peterson and Tiffany Brymer having to win a close tie-breaker to earn the doubles point for the Women of Troy. Singles victories by Brymer and Melissa Esmero then gave the Trojans a 3-1 lead. However, the Tribe's Lindsay Sullivan defeated USC's Bernadette Bayani to narrow the deficit to 3-2 with two singles matches still in progress.

After falling to William and Mary's Delphine Troch, 5-7, in the first set, USC's No. 1 singles player, Jewel Peterson, fought back and defeated Troch, 6-4, 6-4, to secure the victory for the Trojans. Maureen Diaz added a final point for the Women of Troy by holding on to win a grueling three hour duel against the Tribe's Nina Kamp, 6-3, 6-7 (6-8), 6-3.

The Women of Troy's next match is against the University of Miami at noon on Sunday, March 11, at Marks Tennis Stadium.
