Crabb Advances to Final of Mile at NCAA Indoor Championships

March 9, 2001

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - University of Oregon senior Katie Crabb continued her chase after a second All-America honor Friday by advancing to the finals of the mile at the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships at the University of Arkansas' Randal Tyson Track Center.

Crabb finished fourth in the second of two qualifying heats Friday with a time of 4:44.67 and less than a half second back of the top three placers - Lesley Higgins of Colorado (first, 4:44.38), North Carolina's Shalane Flanagan (second, 4:44.45) and Kansas State's Korene Hinds (third, 4:44.53). Crabb's time ranked third of the four qualifiers from the two heats based on Friday's times, while the top three qualifiers from each heat also automatically qualified.

'I'm thrilled the prelim is over, and I'm excited about tomorrow,' Crabb said. 'It's my last race as a Duck, so I'll do everything I can do, and hopefully finish well and make it a good race.'

The race unfolded with the top seed, UNC freshman Shalane Flanagan, taking the pack through opening quarters of 69 and 71 seconds. Crabb pushed to the lead when the pace started to sag in the third quarter and led until midway through the final lap when Colorado's Higgins cut in front of Crabb for the lead. Momentarily worried about a tangle-up, Crabb slowed and steadied herself with her arm, before regaining momentum to finish with the leaders.

'I was glad that it went out at a good pace,' Crabb said, 'so I could play off the leaders' shoulders until the place became too slow. At that point, I could feel the pack behind me and didn't want it to be a kicker's race with a lot of people finishing at the same time. It was a physical race the whole way - it felt like I had a hand on somebody else or trading elbows the whole time.'

Arkansas' Tracy Robertson won the first heat (4:43.57), ahead of Stanford's Lauren Fleshman (second, 4:43.69) and Applachian State's Mary Jane Harrelson (third, 4:43.79).

Looking ahead to tomorrow, Crabb competes in the mile final at 6:15 p.m. (CT), and Duck redshirt sophomore Jason Boness competes in the men's NCAA high jump at 4:15 p.m. (CT). Boness is seeded 11th with his season best of 7-2 1/4 that won the Mountain Pacific Championships two weekends ago in Flagstaff, Ariz.
