Johnson Pitches Six-Hitter

March 9, 2001

YAKIMA, Wash. - Thad Johnson pitched a six-hitter as Oregon State beat Washington State 6-3 in non-league baseball Friday afternoon at Parker Field. Josh Carter extended his hitting streak to 16 games with a single that started a decisive three-run eighth inning for the Beavers (10-8 overall, 0-0 Pacific-10).

OSU and Washington State (5-12, 0-0) continue their series Saturday at 2 p.m. and wrap it up Sunday at noon, the final game can be heard on KLOO-AM (1340).

On Friday, Johnson tossed his second complete game of the season as Oregon State won its second straight and for the 10th time in its last 15 games. The senior righthander walked one and struck out five, allowing just one earned run.

'Thad was outstanding,' OSU head coach Pat Casey said. 'And he's been tough on a consistent basis this season. He did what any pitcher has to do to be successful - get the ball over the plate and keep it down in the strike zone.'

Johnson improved his record to 2-2 and lowered his earned run average to 3.53. He faced the minimum number of hitters over the first five innings despite giving up three hits, one Cougar was caught stealing and the Beavers turned two double plays to erase the other baserunners.

'Get the leadoff hitter out,' Johnson said. 'Or, get a double play to kill anything somebody gets going. You throw strikes and let them put the ball in play.'

That's not as easy as it sounds, and it was made tougher by a WSU lineup loaded with lefthanded hitters trying to take advantage of Parker Field's 312-foot rightfield line.

'I didn't think about that a whole lot,' Johnson said. 'On a field like that, you've got to keep the ball down.'

OSU immediately took a 1-0 lead when Eric Stark led off the first inning with a homer to right-centerfield. The Beavers boosted that to 3-0 in the sixth inning, after Brian Barden was intentionally walked to load the bases with one out, Andy Jarvis drove a two-run single to left-center.

Washington State rallied to score a run in the sixth inning and a pair of unearned runs in the seventh for a 3-3 tie. Then Carter, 0-for-3 at that point, grounded a single through the left side to start the top of the eighth inning and advanced to second on an error.

Curtis Davis' groundout moved Carter to third, then Barden tripled off the wall in deep left-center to drive in Carter for a 4-3 lead. Jarvis followed with a double down the rightfield line to score Barden and chase WSU starter Tony Banaszak. Pinch-hitter Chris Biles greeted reliever Donny Davis with a single up the middle to drive in the final run.

Barden and Jarvis were both 2-for-4 as the sophomores continued to pull out of recent lulls at the plate. In OSU's last two games, Barden is 5-for-10 with a triple, a homer and three runs batted in, Jarvis is 4-for-9 with a homer, a double and six RBIs.

'It's great to see those guys really coming around at the plate,' said Casey, whose team had 13 hits Friday and has 44 hits in its last three games. 'We've put together back-to-back solid ballgames, and the key is to keep building on that and challenge ourselves to play that way day-in and day-out.'

Davis was 2-for-3 to raise his batting average to .471, while Carter is now batting .469 and has a hit in every game he's played this season. Stark added a double to his home run for a 2-for-5 day.
